Do you really need an antivirus program for a phone? If so any free versions?

My question is.. Is it a necessity? I would imagine that when using the web on the phone it would be prone to viruses and Trojans.

Thanks

I personally dont use antivirus software, and am all over the web. I've been like this with most of my Palm OS devices, and haven't had any issues. That being said, I took a quick look at Symantec's site, which listed these as threats.

Worst case....

I have the 700w, but I think the virus thing pretty much covers all platforms (well....most anyways). I do agree that it is better safe than sorry, but, the way I see it, the worst case scenario is that you get a virus, and you have to do a hard reset. As long as you are backed up with something like sprite, isn't that a pretty safe risk to take, or am I missing a threat to the hardware physically being disabled?

I recently switched from a POS 680 syncing with my home Mac to a WM6 750 syncing with my work PC (XP). I felt absolutely safe with the former but have decided to be more cautious with the 750/PC set up - though I honestly don't feel very threatened.

I feel the physical security issue is far more serious and bought Kaspersky Mobile Security 7.0 because of its physical security features. The SW security features are a bonus that I treated like a freebie. FWIT, the KMS7.0 software is working well and doing what I want.

The most important advantage of buying the software is that it got the Security Officer at my work off my back. Buying the software showed due diligence on my part and the S.O. turned his attention to someone else

I think antivirus software for Treo is like a commode in your car...it would be nice to have on long trips, but you can probably live without it. The potential is always there for a new virus, but as you can see from Forgot's link, there hasn't been a new virus for Palm OS in years. Personally, I'll take my chances.

Well if the Norton smartphone av software is like their desktop software it would slow down the wm software even more than just low memory uissues and might overwhelm the palm os as well.

You don't need anti-virus yet. If you did I certainly wouldn't get anything by symantec or mcafee. They have a habit of bloating over time, taking over your whole system and embedding themselves everywhere.

The strategy is bit reminiscent of evolutionary biology. If all the niches are filled by the 'benign' but bloated symantec or mcafee apps then theres no space for real trojans/worms or viruses. Somewhere, deep down in those apps is a real virus scanner but I'm betting less than 10% of the total resources consumed are used by it.

If AVG Anti-Virus and Internet Security - Welcome build a scanner, it's probably worth using.
