Now You Know Treo 680 Smartphone: My little review...

Ok, on Kimmy's prompt I went and found the Treo 680 Smartphone edition of Palm's Now You Know series. This isn't a full review, but rather a little blurb on what I thought of the book and some of it's more interesting points.

It's a small paperback book of only 144 pages, and it can easily fit in a briefcase, purse, or large pocket. While it contained some information specific to the upcoming Treo 680, most of the information and tips can apply to the other Treo smartphones.

From the looks of things, and as most readers know, the phone application has been changed to include contacts. Also, the media application has had an overhaul, and they've added the Voice Memo application found on some other Palm OS devices. Some other changes that have been made to the Phone application include an "extract call" feature which, like the private feature, allows for pulling a single person from a conference call and having a side conversation, then rejoining the conference.

Another interesting feature is that you can now add a pre-determined number string to the beginning of a 4,5,6, or 7 number string. I know that sounds confusing, so let me explain. Say each person at your work has a 4 digit extension, but the same main number. You can just dial their 4 digit extension, and the phone will add the first 7-10 digits for you automatically. Also useful if you just want to enter a 7 digit string for local numbers and have the area code added automatically. Other additions, such as the addition of an anniversary reminder to the contacts application, also make the Treo 680 all the more interesting.

Overall the book is chock full of useful information for all Treo users. One of my favorite things are the little tips listed at the bottom of some of the pages. One of my favorite is "To prevent hearing loss, don't ever place your ear tightly against the speakerphone." Thank you Palm, my ears were bleeding and I couldn't figure out why.

If you are searching for a good source of Treo knowledge come to Treonauts.com. If you want to be able to carry that knowledge with you in paperback form, get the book.

Thanks for the review, forgot. Now you just need a 680 to apply the knowledge on.

I've got a rep a cingular who's going to call me as soon as they come in. They usually come in a day or two before they go on sale, so I might be able to snap a few pics!

That's what I'm wishing for! (not so much being famous as taking a pic)
