SDHC card reader?

Can older/standard SD card readers read SDHC cards, or do they require new ones? Any way to tell?

Only SDHC card readers can read the high capacity cards. It will have SDHC written on it, like here.

Cough cough ** bullshit *** cough cough....

That simply isn't true. I have 2 different SD card readers that are not in ANY way labelled "SDHC" that work FINE with my 4GB and 8GB SDHC cards. Specifically I am using this one:

SanDisk 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter (SDAD-67)

And then a little USB one that I bought in a Tesco in the UK.

So, in short, you MIGHT have success with an older SD card reader. However, it is really a crap shoot.

(And, btw, forgot, no offense intended....)

Just because they are not labelled as being SDHC compatible doesn't necessarily mean they aren't, but they would have needed to be designed with that in mind.

It's better to advise people to buy a specific SDHC compatible reader rather than say any or some readers work and have them come back here because the one they bought didn't work

I would definitely agree that if you are buying a new one, getting one that is labeled as compatible is wise. Even if an older (accidentally compatible) one works, you are more likely to get better transfer rates with one specifically designed to be used with SD cards.

I suspect many are like me in that they already had the card reader and really hate to buy another one if it can be avoided (not that they are that much or anything).

None taken

Like Taz said, better to suggest getting a new one then have people totally confused on why they read on some regular readers and not others.

I posted this also on SanDisk's forums...

Odd... I just won a SDHC 16 GB SanDisk Ultra II card... on the basis that this reader/adapter would work for it... (model labeled same as above) and has the following label on front... does that mean this won't work as SanDisk adversed? Is SanDisk mislabeling this adapter?

SDHC Compatible Reader/Adapter
BTW the model number just to be clear on the back label reads... SDAD-67
