Garmin GPS software for Palm devices

I've heard that Garmin (my current preferred GPS product outside of the Treo) will soon be available for the Palm GPS. Will the TomTom product be discontinued?

The software from Garmin will be the Mobile XT product and offer turn by turn directions, with voice as well as the Garmin online service which includes traffic, fuel prices, hotel prices and weather information. I've read that the current price will be $249 in the U.S. and Canada ... including the Garmin online information. According to Engadget, it should be available in November.

Seems a strange move, but Palm never seem to do things the easy way

I'm actually pretty excited about this, and it should get me to finally drop the cash on GPS.

i recently bought the Garmin 10x gps receiver and i'm using it with their MobileXT software on my Treo 680.

Seems to me a good navigation program. 3D maps, turn by turn voice prompts, Contacts integration,

But it is quite a memory hog. It takes about 8 MB of RAM for the software. Freezes and resets should be espected, specially if you leave Chattermail or other application running in the background.

Cost:
Receiver (with belt clip and car charger, no software, no maps) 99$ on Amazon
Generic Car mount, 20$
Mobile XT Software downloaded from Garmin website
Basemap downloaded from Garmin website
Road maps for my country are published for free by a non profit group.

If you buy the box with software and the City Navigator NT maps, the cost should raise some 30$ or 40$, so i don't get the 249$ pice tag.

i've had a treo for a few months now and i was wondering about the gps.
i'm an aviation enthusiast. if i'm in a cesna, mooney, citabria, ets. and i run out of rangr of a cell tower, does that mean i lose gps, even if it's from o module, or are the bluetooth gps's not a-gps?

Proper GPS systems, i.e. ones with a GPS receiver, use satelites to triangulate your position rather than the cell phone towers, so they would work pretty much anywhere

GPS is a GPS ... no cell phone towers needed.

BUT ... as an aviation guy myself, I wouldn't remotely consider using a Treo and BT GPS "as the pilot" on a small plane. You would be far better going with a Garmin 295, 395 or 495 IMHO.
