Angry Push Palm on BTVD

If some well known Treo site with a nice high volume website posted a petition to Palm demanding they fix this debacle and provided a hot key for people to sign the petition AND posted a letter of complaint to the Justice Department with provision for people to sign it as co-complainants I think we might get their attention. If the Justice departments gets a few tens of thousands of people saying they feel they were deceived about the capabilities of the product they bought they will force the issue. If Palm gets a few tens of thousands of sigs on a petition and sees that a like number are complaining to the Feds, and they don't have their heads ... in the sand, they will resolve the issue PDQ before the Feds do anything, if for no other reason to avoid the publicity of having Justice bring an action against them.

They've ignored our complaints for years now. Time to play hard ball.

VoiceCall and Jabra BT150

I am currently in demo mode with VoiceCall, and found that I was unable to initiate voice dialing with my old Motorola H500. Needless to say I was PISSED at having upgraded phones only to find that i downgraded in features! Pressing the button on the headset did nothing, and holding the button down turned it off. I too started to think it was a Palm hardware problem (after reading this thread) but on a whim i bought the Jabra BT150 off of Woot! for $10ea(x2) + $5 shipping. Turns out I can hold the call button down until it beeps a second time and lo-and-behold voice dialing works!!

the bt150 isn't perfect, i have to turn the sound way up and occasionly it unpairs itself even when the treo is 3ft away. But it does work.

So i guess its a matter of finding the right headset.

Heh, you say that it is not an issue with the Palm devices. It may not be a hardware issue, but it has to be some sort of software bug. I just recently purchased a Joby Zivio Boom headset ($130 USD) and have connected it to many phones and smart phones and have used it successfully until I met the Palm Centro. Sure it will dial the last call dialed properly, and will answer incoming calls properly, but I should be able to double click my joby button to initiate voice commands through the bluetooth headset. This is what this headset was designed to do, and has done successfully on every other phone it met. I refuse to go out and purchase another bluetooth headset just because it sometimes works with Palm devices. I feel that Palm needs to fix this issue and if someone started that petition mentioned a few posts earlier, I would gladly put my name on it.

If I had just some cheap headset that only costed maybe $30 maximum, I would not have a problem switching, but I do not wish to have a $130 headset sitting on my desk collected dust while I'm back to using a $30 headset that has horrible sound quality and that I have to shout at to be heard by the person I'm talking to.

Schoktra, this thread is nearly 2 years old. Palm will almost definitely not be fixing this issue, considering they're about to release a new device with a new OS. Palm OS is for all intents and purposes dead, IE no further development.

Discussion & Solution:

1. If you go to the Palm website and read what they have to say (as of Jan. 2009), it is clear that they have no intention of ever fixing this problem. I think they just want you to buy a Pre or Pro.

2. While many of us noted that a 3-4 year old RAZR can do this, there are very few non-Smartphones capable of VAD using a Bluetooth headset currently on the market. The Xenon and Voyager are two that supposedly work.

3. I have found VoiceDial by Voice Signal to be excellent. It is suprisingly fast going through my 2300 contact (limited to 3000 by the app) address book and very accurate.

4. Workarounds include:
a. Use a wired headset
b. Initiate the call on the handset, then switch to Bluetooth (but is difficult to do if the Treo is in the silent mode).

5. Semi-Solution:
Buy a Jabra A210. It plugs into the Treo's headset jack. The Treo treats it as a wired headset and it (the A210) is paired to your BT headset. This works. I just Velcro the A210 to my Treo 700p.

Well it's not really a case of just fixing a problem, it would take a major rewrite of PalmOS, which would be pretty pointless on an OS which is EOL.

This thread is well over 2 years old so I expect the original poster has either decided to live with the problem or bought something else.

I recognize the whole rewrite challenge. It's a shame. Other than this one issue, I thought the Palm OS was pretty good. I'm postponing getting a NOKIA E-71x because I'm having difficulty determining if it has the features of my Treo 700p. I don't want to give up the Treo's best features, but VAD on a Bluetooth headset is priority.

While reading a magazine article about all of the newest features of the iPhone 3G S, I was amazed by how many of these (video, MMS, copy & paste, the ability to search all of your information for specific characters) have always been available in my Treo. Obviously, Palm missed a huge opportunity.

Thank you, jfa02, but the biggest problem with the NOKIA E-71x is that it is different from the E-71 and NOKIA says they do not know the differences. They told me to contact AT&T. Based on my experience, I doubt if AT&T's tech support will know the subtle details that I'm concerned about. Basically, all the carriers tell you to get the phone, check it out and return it if you don't like it. Besides that being a pain, I didn't find an alternative that I would then choose.
