Recover Data from broken Treo 650

I had a recent accident with my Treo 650 (verizon), and the LCD has been smashed. However, the phone seems to be working fine otherwise. It will power up, and even dial calls without a problem.

I am wanting to sync the treo with my mac (OSX 10.3) using the Palm software that came with the phone, and get the last remaing data off of the phone.

Is there a way of syncing the phone with keypad shortcuts, as I cannot navigate via the LCD (cause its broken!)?

Is there another sync app that would allow me to sync "manually"?

In the past, my normal hotsync require initializing the sync process from the phone, not with button on the sync cable (USB), and not via Palm software.

Any input would be helpfull, as I have to get my 650 back to the insurance company in the next week or so.

thanks,

intro2trig

P.S. I considered replacing the screen (ebay screen + YouTube instruction video), as the data is worth that time / money / effort. However, I am am afraid I do not have the time for that, as the insurance company wants the damaged unit back ASAP.

Can you still see anything on the screen? Does it respond at all, or is totally black?

Also, here is a link to steps from Palm to troubleshoot your Hotsync process. I don't have a Mac, but from what I understand you should be able to use the button on your usb sync cable to initiate a sync. Try following the steps and see if it works. The only one that has to be done on the palm is clearing any pending alarms, and this can be done by using the keys. Hold down the center button on the 5-way navigator, press right twice to get to "clear all", then press the center button again to select it. Please let us know if this works, or if we need to look into it further.

The screen will light up, and even changes when selections are made on the nav buttons, home button, etc. Suprisingly, the phone seems to work fine otherwise. The entire screen is smashed, so there is nothing but brocken LCD colors to look at.

I'm trying the palm link you provided. I will let you know if I am able to get it to sync from the button on the cable.

For some reason, and it was the same with my Treo 600's, I have always had to initiate the sync from the treo, as the button the USB cable never seemed to do it...

I will report back shortly.

Thanks!

Well... Good news!

forgot, I followed the Palm link you provided, and navigating to "part 2" of the hotsync troubleshoot, it mentioned a possible conflict with having several hotysnc users. I realized I had an old user setup from my Treo 600, that was long out-dated. I soft-reset my treo 650, deleted the old hotsync user, re-booted Palm Desktop, and my treo 650 sync'd without a problem!

I had already tried soft-reseting earlier, with no success, so it seems there was some conflict with the mutiple hotsync users setup within Palm Desktop.

Thanks again! Now I get setup my new Treo 700p, which the insurance company was nice enough to provide with, as they no longer have replacement 650's! I guess I can't complain too much...

Great! I'm glad this worked out for you! The bonus is, you can still replace the screen on your 650 and have two Treo's

I wish I could keep the 650, but as usual, the insurance company wants it back. When I made the initial claim, I was a good boy, and told them the truth... that is was damaged, and not stolen.

In any event, I think the 700p will suite me just fine! Thanks for the help.
