Enterprise Wireless Sync? Yeah.........I remember contemplating that option.

I looked into the two options for Wireless Sync: Enterprise Wireless Sync (server based) and Basic Wireless Sync (20 users max per computer). My needs are 50 to 60 Treo users who need to sync our corporate Lotus Notes email and calendar.

The Enterprise version required a server, annual licenses, a seemingly complex setup, and other operational costs. I didn't like the recurring costs and the complicated setup (largely due to the fact that we already had 4 users setup on the basic software).

The basic Wireless Sync setup only allows you to have 20 Treo users on a single computer. So, this meant I would need 3 computers to handle my 50 to 60 users. The setup of the software is very easy and hasn't caused me a single issue after over a year.

My environment for Wireless Sync:

3 new HP rack servers (low end): 80GB SATA hard drive, 2GB RAM, Windows 2003 Server OS
Installed Wireless Sync (basic free version) on all three servers with one active Lotus Notes account running 24/7 (dummy account on all 3)
Users have mix of 650, 700p, and 700w
Servers run 24/7 and are restarted once a week or so.

Why go this route? The servers didn't cost all that much, plus they can be used for most anything else we need. Wireless Sync's free version takes up very little space or resources, even with the full 20 users. Also, should one of these servers crash or need to be rebuilt for some reason, setting up the Wireless Sync again will only take me an hour without any loss of data. The only data really being used is a copy of each user's Notes ID file. Over time, I will have saved a lot more money and had the ability to get more use out of my 3 lower end servers.

My first few users had this environment:

A secreatary's desktop computer had Wireless Sync (free version) installed and computer was left running 24/7
Windows 2000 Pro

With all that said, we have no issues with Wireless Sync or Treo crashes/freezes and the only negative aspect so far is that running this app on the Treo phones taxes the battery a little more. Once in a long while, one of our users will report that they are not receiving new emails, but a simple Soft Reset fixes that problem immediately.

I would say there may be an issue with the Enterprise version slowing the Treos down. You've already committed to the Enterprise option, but I would recommend trying the free option (which can be done with literally any computer that has an Internet connection and a little free HD space.

Sorry you're having such a bad time. Wish I could give you specific answers, but hopefully my explanation will shed a little light on this.

Oh yeah........one other BIG reason we didn't go with Enterprise. Verizon Wireless (our only cellular carrier) does not support Enterprise Wireless Sync, as it is supported by an outside third party. This is a problem for me. I did not want to have Treo problems down the road and find Verizon and this third party both pointing the finger at each other when a Sync problem happened. If Verizon provided 100% support for the Enterprise version, it would have added more weight to that option (but probably not enough for us).
