Palm Desktop corrupted - now what?

Somehow somewhere during the process of creating Active Sync and other software to sync my new Treo PRO I managed to clobber Palm Desktop and Quick Sync that I used with my 650 and 680.
At this point all I know for sure is that one or more of the Palm executables is missing or clobbered. When invoking Palm Desktop my PC searched, but never could find the file it referred to as Palm.exe. I found that file in the folder in which the Palm Desktop files are located. But when I clicked on it the install Wizard appeared, so something is really messed up.
My PC runs Windows XP SP2, my new phone is a Treo PRO. Palm Desktop was installed originally about 4 years ago when I got a 650. I don't recall whether I updated the program when I got my 680 almost two years ago in November 2006.
The current data is on my 680 and if I can recover Palm Desktop I should be able to back it up.
I have never used Microsoft Outlook but for calendar and schedule I relied on Palm Desktop. I also use Datebk6. I was looking for a way to continue to use Palm Desktop for PIM stuff on the PC and Outlook a minimally as possible. Sorry at this point I haven't figured out what limitations may exist.
I mention all this in the event it might help someone figure out what my options are at this point.
My first thought was to simply reinstall the Palm Desktop and sync making sure to require that HandHeld trumps PC. Is this a good idea?
What other options should I consider? Also, can anyone think of anything my setup for the Treo PRO, which basically was limited at this point to installing ActiveSync and Pocket Quicken for Windows Mobile 6.1

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
