IMAP synchronises the mail on the client i.e. PC or Treo with what's on the server so when you open, move, delete a message that change is reflected on the other mail clients. POP3, which is the normal message of mail retrieval, downloads the message from the server to the client. Once downloaded the message(s) will no longer be on the server so another client will not be able to download it/them. The down side to IMAP is because your messages stay on the server it can take a lot of storage, depending on how much email you keep.
