Canada - Fido - don't go there

Do not activate a Treo (or upgrade from a phone to a Palm PDA) in Canada with Fido if you want to use VersaMail or any other POP3 client.

a) "We don't support Treos," said the Fido telephone customer service representative.

b) Fido does not have an SMTP mail server so there is no way to send mail.

c) Fido only supports using webmail on a Browser... in other words you can use the brower to do whatever you want on a browser, including webmail. Is your webmail provider friendly to the tiny screen? Mine isn't.

Fido *may* be fine as a phone-only provider or for web-based e-mail... and they *do* have a monthly 1GB WiFi plan for PC-cards that some have used for that fruit-branded mobile phone.

But Fido is not Treo-friendly. They are a subsidiary of Rogers Wireless, which de facto means Canada has only one GSM provider, and only half of that company's brand (Rogers) provides service for Treos.

Don't waste $35 on a Fido sim card.

Wow what an extraordinary way to run a service.

I can understand the Treo support issue having spoken to Sprint reps about the overhead involved in servicing Treos versus other makes of handsets.

Webmail only? Thats like Hotmail c.1999
