protection plan procedures?

my screen on my sprint 700p treo died this week while i was on vacation. i called sprint then and they told me to just go to a store and if they can't fix it they'd replace it. but, i didn't have time and now i'm back home. i called my local store and they told me i need to go to a repair facility. i then called spint and they said i need to file a claim with the insurance company they use.

i do have the protection plan. the sprint guy on phone also says 'you'll have to pay $50' - this is before anyone knows what's wrong with the phone.

anyone know what the proper procedure is on this?

Do you have the "total package" protection from Sprint? I mean the $7 package? You should be able to take it to a Sprint Store and have a tech look at it. If they can't fix it, then you will have to call the insurance company. They will charge your credit card over the phone and overnight you a phone.

The $50 is the "deductible" they charge for replacing your phone with a reburbished phone. You may be lucky enough to get a new one.

But, if you are paying the $3 for the repair job, then take it to the Sprint Store and waste their time. Heck, you are paying for it!

My advice, if you do have the $3 repair, "drop it like its hot"! Just get the insurance for $4. When you take it to sprint, they will tell you it has water damage anyway! That is their excuse for not fixing it and sending you to the Insurance Co.

thanks-i do have the TEP - $7 coverage. i went to the repair store dropped it off, came back and they replaced the screen - no questions asked as to what happened - and no cost!

before i went it was just confusing because everytime i called i got a different answer to my question as to what to do. but i guess that's typical with customer service nowadays!

Hey I was wondering, I just bought a Treo650 off of ebay. I thought about adding the total protection plan for $7. I wanted to know what would happen if I filed an insurance claim for it. Would they replace it with a newer model smartphone? Will it have the same features as my smartphone has now? Has anyone done this before? I don't know what the normal procedure is.

Well remember, if you just file a claim because you want a new phone that technically constitutes fraud. I'm not saying you would do that, I'm just saying...

However, if you do have the coverage and it does get messed up, there is a possibility you could get a newer model. That said, you could get one of the old ones, if they have any left in stock.

A little heads-up;

If it's within a year of the phone being discontinued, Assurion is evil for having a few old models in REFURB status.

If it's out of a year, they've offloaded all of the old models on the chumps. Roll out the new ones.

Atleast, that's what I've assumed from seeing Assurion in action.

Well I definitely wouldn't wanna file a claim unless I had to. The reason I was asking was bc when I got the phone, everything worked fine, then after a few weeks or so, it started powering off on its own, and I have done everything I knew to do to try and fix it. I haven't downloaded any 3rd party software. It is very troublesome when ur on a call and the phone just shuts off. I did drop it once...so don't know if that is the cause or not. And with the fraud it should b against the law for them to tell u, that u have water damage and u don't just so that u will have to file an insurance claim. That is fraud. But oh well...they make the rules I guess
