Paper Treo Pro Early Specifications

From our Treo 850 blog post:

* Some images from boy genius report. The 800w may well be an early prototype and not representative of the final design.

The Treo 850 promises to become one of the thinnest Touchscreen + Keyboard smartphones in the world (see below) when it is released (hopefully at the end of July) thanks to being only 14mm thick – a full 25% slimmer (4.6mm less) than the already small Palm Centro.

The image comparison below shows the Treo 850 roughly to scale with the Centro. The first measuring D14mm x W60mm x H113mm compared to the D18.6mm x W53.5mm x H107.2mm of the Centro. Thus, aside from its slimness, the Treo 850 is 6.5mm (12.5%) wider and some 5mm (5%) longer than the Centro which guarantees both a larger screen and keyboard that business users will demand. I also expect the Treo 850 to weigh only between 100–120 grams (some 33% less than the existing Treo 750 that it replaces).

The rest of the Treo 850 specifications are similarly exciting with:
  • Built-in assisted-GPS receiver
  • Built-in 802.11 b/g WiFi
  • 320x320 pixel resolution touchscreen
  • GSM, EDGE radio
  • High-speed UMTS HSDPA 3.6 data connectivity
  • microSD slot under the battery
  • 2 Megapixel Camera
  • 1500 mAh battery (that should provide 5.5 hours+ of talk time)
  • a micro-USB connector for both power and sync
  • Bluetooth 2.0 EDR + A2DP (allowing you to use Stereo Bluetooth Headphones for wireless music)
  • 256MB NAND-Flash (with over 175MB available to use) + 32 MB SDRAM
  • Runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional

Overall I have to admit that the more I learn about the Treo 850 the more I like it. Its looks are very appealing with the slick black body – one that now happens to be ultrathin and ultralight – and there’s absolutely nothing to fault in its high-end specifications. I reckon that it may very well prove to become one of the most successful Windows Mobile Palm smartphones to date when it is released at the end of July.

Separately, the Treo 850 also represents the single largest and most significant design “jump” that Palm has made in quite a while and may finally be indicative of a completely new design culture at the company – one which will hopefully deliver a range of stunning devices running the new NOVA operating system in 2009. It’s certainly encouraging and refreshing to see Palm slowly but surely moving on the right track again.

I would not mind having the shade of blue shown for the 800w for the 850.

Yeah I this is recent penchant for having devices available in a variety of colours is pretty good for the consumer instead of the stock silver or black.

The only thing I dislike about the 850w is the under battery micro-SD slot, the 500v is like and taking the SD card out is a real pain

I agree it might quickly become that if I have to take the card out more frequently than I have been with 750. Why can't they leave things well enough alone?

I'm sure it was done to keep the thickness down.

Yeah I'm sure thats the case. I don't really remove the card that often, so it really won't bother me if and when I get this device.

Red face

Though the rest of the specs looks ok, 256MB ROM + 32MB RAM is a too little to compete with current top sellers.
