How to force GSM/EDGE instead of 3G

Hi,

The 3G signal at my house is very weak (1 bar) while the edge is 2-3 bars. I got dropped call like crazy and thinking to return this phone if there is no way to tweak it.

Is there a way to force it to stay on edge (via reg tweak or any software) ?

Thanks,

Sprint has a system called Airave that enables the home to become a WiFi zone. I'm wondering whether AT&T has the same. It really boosts the signal.

You can change it in the settings, go to Settings, Personal, Phone, the Band tab and from the Select your network type drop down select GSM.

Att is reportedly done with femtocell testing and will deploy soon. As I understand it it makes your house a virtual cell tower.

Yeah, basically I understand you hook a small base station (femtocell) to your existign DSL or Cable ethernet hookup whihc then connects it to AT&T's network (via TCP/IP). It then acts as your own personal 3g Cell tower in your house as it rotues your call traffic via IP to AT&T.

Perfect solution it seems for Businesses who have "cell dead" areas in their buidlings and homes that are not near a cell tower.

Is this multi radio, ie would Verizon and Sprint users be able to get extra signal via my femtocell if I had one?

unsure but it might possibly work that way. It might be on only the gsm frequency if they are different for cdma carriers.

I would expect them to be carrier specific as it will no doubt be configured to connect to a certain IP address(es) at the carriers end.

Vodafone UK have just announced availability of their femtocell box

The unlocked version (ATT) doesn't have the Band tab under the Phone. I found this link which shows a registry tweak:

Re: Finally got it, How to force GSM/EDGE instead of 3G - AT&T/Cingular (HTC) - Wireless Forums from AT&T

HKLM\Software\OEM\UMTS Change OpMode from a 0 to a 1

(Auto=0, GSM=1, 3g=2)

It works! However, it is not flexible. Another way is to use the BandSwitch program from DHR Software - CommMgrPro - Bandswitch - [Daniel Herrero Rey]
