Smile Memos App - upon a Tap, won't let me go in, crashes and reboots HHeld

Memos App

Just fixed a Desktop problem this weekend. I now find when I tap into Memos both by Icon or by designated button the HandHeld goes black, crashes and reboots itself. It won't let me go into Memos at all. All the records are in there as it shows same in the Apps with 92 records and same amount backed up onto my Desktop so I know the contents are still intact in the HHeld.

1. What is causing problem.
2. How can I rectify.
3. Will I lose all info presently in Memos with any method to rectify.

On another note ....
yyyyyy App ???
4. On HHeld I don't remember when or how I got the following and I don't know what it is.
- under Apps / Delete - yyyyyy (6 y's with 2 tiny little dots above each y and at 532K)
- under Apps Send - shows same as under Apps Delete
- under Apps Info / Version - can't find it
- under Apps Info / Size - shows same as under Delete
- under Apps Info / Records - shows as (same as in Delete) yyyyyy N/A
What is it, do I need it and should I delete it?

ZLib App ???
5. What is ZLib under Apps with 0 Size
What is it, do I need it, should I delete and if so under which app does it come from?

Thanks in advance for any guidance again.

PS - I skimmed thru the posts off and on in the past in this whole site. Because I had good guidance from 2 moderators this weekend, I've become an overnight believer of the Forum. A wealth of good info with humour here and there. Very nice.

Sounds like a corruption problem. Download a trial of TealScan from Tealpoint.com and scan the device (I think it scans the memo database), and see if it comes back with any corruption, if so...fix it, and you should be good to go.

I googled zlib and this is the description: ZLib.prc 1.1.4-1 (for Palm OS) - ZLlib is a free, general-purpose, legally unencumbered, multi-platform lossless data-compression library widely used by file compressors/decompressors, backup programs, ...

So yeah, I think you probably need it.

Hello Gentlemen, just an update.

I also contacted Palm who recommended I
- do soft and hard resets (done both ??? times before either didn't help)
- do back to factory default settings (would have been last resort)
- considered your Teal trial software (should have) but before that was about to "houseclean" my Memos via Desktop so went to town all day today as able to get Memos on my Desktop now.
- once done hot synced. Figured I'd black out again in Hheld Memos.

Nice Surprise. It opened up on me. Since I'm a one glass wine drinker (don't drink much), guess I'll get drunk on Pepsi tonight ... that's how good a feeling it is !!! Yes there was something in there causing problems, possibly even caused my Desktop problem earlier and unbeknownst to me which one of the I don't know, as it came out during my "Memo Housecleaning".

A suggestion tho. I realized it doesn't matter how much backup we have on Treo, but when I couldn't get into BOTH Desktop and MemoDB earlier this week at the same time, and if info is important, and this could apply to any App that might go funny on me ...

I decided to save as my very last resort. Is very time consuming but:
- copied MEMOS and CONTACTS info direct (one by one) into Wordperfect (or Word) on my computer and saved it that way
- the CALENDAR, I took smallest size digital jpgs of all dates in Desktop off computer screen (use night time, no flash, macro setting in camera) works well (and there were a lot) I felt were important. If you try it and get blurs and you will, just keep trying til you get clear shots. I don't think you want to know how many shots I took, but at least that's behind me now.

I may never need them again but if I had to manually type everything in again, the Contacts and Memos just have to be blocked/pasted back to Desktop. And Calendar would take time as would have to retype back to Treo software manually. If that sounds like too much work, at least the important basics, once a week. Now I will just have a little bit weekly to update this way for myself. Another situation is if Handheld had to be sent back to factory and for whatever reason Desktop was screwed up. Unless you guys have a simpler idea.

I would not have even thought of it say a month ago. But my 2 "combined" problems made me aware (you see I had passwords in the Memos etc, needed them but couldn't get at them from any angle). Ironically am a backup believer of everything, but last 2 weeks didn't help me much when my Treo MemoDB AND Desktop BOTH backfired at the SAME time. From now on I'll just back up manually last few day(s) worth on (WP or Word) after every sync seeing as I'll be on the computer here anyway.

Now that my Treo is cleaned up and all, I'm D/Loading the Backup system I was recommended on this forum. I've read up on it, now time to utilize it.

Shirley

Shirley,

I'm going to give you a thanks just for hanging in there. I can't imagine copying contacts one by one. Wish you had contacted us...there are easier ways. Glad you got it all working again. I would recommend getting an SD card and then backing that up to your PC as well. Hotsync does not back up everything, whereas backup programs like NVBackup, which is free, will copy everything on your device to your card. To be honest, I use a number of backup methods cause after you've had an experience such as yours, you don't want to do it again. I use Resco Backup for daiy backups, NVBackup for weekly backups, and BackupMan for special backups (e.g. before adding software). I keep five sets of the daily and weekly backups. Therefore if something comes up screwy, I hopefully have a healthy backup set to go to. I also recommend doing a Clean Slate at least annually(See sticky here: Clean Slate). You can also backup to a server (check out Drive HQ). I am probably a little overly paranoid when it comes to backups, but I no longer have problems with losing anything and most of the backups have been set and will run automatically until the device dies.

Also between SafeGuard, TealScan, DBFixIt, and PalmInternals, my device is fairly stable, even though I play around with a lot of new software all the time. Best wishes with your device and I hope you now get to enjoy it.

Stu

I feel better now that I can call you Stu. Thanks. Anway, just D/L, backed up and NV thru once. No glitch - very good. Now more questions out of this.

1. It automatically backed to my 2g SD card. I bought and want to install a 4g. Is it just to change the card or any steps to go thru first ie will I lose anything on Treo. I only had H2S Utility app (for H-Shopper) & a few photos. Moved photos to Hheld for now. Now 1st backup is on there also.

2. When I D/L NV, it saved to my Palm Program Folder on my computer but went into an errored username I made inadvertently which has all the rest of my info last time I reset Desktop from Treo CD. I tried to change the user name just now manually but on't let me. What steps to rectify this. I goofed up other day during all the resets on/off/on/off. So far no problems but will it create one with NV, or even make a difference if left alone?

3. I see backup info can be D/L to computer. How so? Pls guide me thru the server settings (shown in NV software)
- FTP server address:
- Port number [21]: 21 (is that left alone)
- Username:
- Password:
- Base directory:

Which would you recommend better: Filezilla or war-ftpd to D/L? I can't use PureFtpd as I'm a Windows lady.

I love a bit of technology but I'm not comp savvy but I do try. Once I get the hang of NV I will look to D/L the others you recommend, one by one. Yes altho NV was a recommend by you and one of your partners on here, not knowing it I was nervous to mess up my mess even more, hence the longgggg way of backing up. I like your way better tho. Shirley

I can answer question Number One now and will research the others.

When you install the new card perform a backup. The new backup will be put onto your new card. As for the other information on your card you will have to copy it to your PC then Copy it back onto your new card. You can do this with a card reader or a card reader application for your Palm OS.

As Comiken stated, you can run another backup to your new card and you'll be all set. Having it on this card will protect you for now. NVBackup may give you some sort of message that you have a new card or it can't find the old one, but just backup again and it will be fine.

2. When I D/L NV, it saved to my Palm Program Folder on my computer but went into an errored username I made inadvertently which has all the rest of my info last time I reset Desktop from Treo CD. Not sure you even need to worry about what folder NVBackup saved to on your PC, as it evidently got put on your device correctly. If you lose it in your PC's folder you can always just download it again.

3. I see backup info can be D/L to computer. How so? Pls guide me thru the server settings (shown in NV software)Not sure what all the stuff below is for, but as Comiken said, you can use a card reader accessory or a card reader app like "Card Reader" or Softick Card Export II, to copy the backup files to your PC.

I love a bit of technology but I'm not comp savvy but I do try. Once I get the hang of NV I will look to D/L the others you recommend, one by one. You may want to stick to one backup program for now. Not everyone is as paranoid as me, and the others cost money, although BackupMan will work without being registered, but its still shareware. Yes altho NV was a recommend by you and one of your partners on here, not knowing it I was nervous to mess up my mess even more, hence the longgggg way of backing up. I like your way better tho. Shirley
I think you'll find backing things up to your card, is much easier. Plus, if your device has to be hard reset and you're away from home, the hotsync isn't much help, but a simple restore from your SD card will get you back up and running in no time. Best wishes.

".... Not everyone is as paranoid as me," - absolutely not, you are being very proactive. That's a very good thing. Those who run into 1 or 2 big glitches learn very quickly what "backup backup backup" means. I have a card reader, will use that. #3 is located within the NV app, top toolbar, server, server settings. But if you're not sure what to do with that info, then obviously we don't need it. Thanks again to both you and Comiken for your help to me.
