![]() | How to make Opera work really well on 755p? Hello all! First post here, though I've been trolling the site ever since I got my 755p in August. So I've been using Opera Mini 4 lately, and I really like it. I am using v 4.0.10222, 20080207. Nice and fresh. I have tried previous versions and found them unstable, but this one is working quite well--no resets yet. I have also discovered that the JVM settings matter quite a bit. I have "use double buffering" and "use high resolution coordinates" selected, set memory to 8 Mb, and set thread stack size to 32Kb. Finally, I'm trying out a trial version of FontSmoother, which has allowed me to get more text on the screen, which is nice. Anyone have any other tips to make Opera even better? If I could only get it to automatically come up on the last page I viewed, I'd be really happy. I find that in general, Opera seems to be faster than Blazer, and it is a lot more pleasing to the eye. The interface is different, so that takes some getting used to, but after using it for a few days, I'm hooked! Jason |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | My favorite way to use opera on my 755p is through ptunes (j/K). I tried Opera Mini a couple of times and I didn't feel it provided any further benefits over the stock Blazer. But if you like, hey...go for it. Let me know what you think of Fontsmoother, I was considering purchasing that one too. Oh, by the way...welcome to Treonauts! |

![]() | Fontsmoother is pretty cool. I would love it if Palm would implement such technology natively. It allows you to choose different fonts for each program. This is very useful as I've discovered that many programs that run on Palm count on the text being a particular size--so some buttons are in a strange place or labels look odd. For Opera Mini, it seems to work really well, probably because it's designed for multiple platform use. I highly recommend a trial if you haven't done so already. Jason |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | You still need the Java runtime, and Palm no longer provides it. I think it's still available from one of the mods though... |

![]() | Yep, you still need the Java VM--I believe I got mine from IBM for a few dollars. I have seen discussion of getting it for free, but for my money it was easier to just download. Here's a link: IBM - IBM WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment 6.1 - WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment - Software Jason |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I didn't get it before Palm took it down, or I'd offer it for free on my site. I had (actually still have) the leaked WM6 rom for at&t. |

![]() | Some other tips Here are some other Opera tips I've discovered... JVM 5.7.2 seems to work better than JVM 5.7.1--it allows you to use the hard keys to go to other applications. This does take away the ability to access the Opera Menu with the phone key, however. Have no fear--the menu can still be accessed by pressing q or w, but that doesn't work if the option key is locked. I find that I don't need the menu if I use shortcuts instead (#2 for bookmarks, for example), and the hard keys to get back to whatever other app I want (no need to hit exit from the menu). It seems that if you give Opera Mini too much memory, you will cause instability on your Treo. For example, with the JVM set to give Opera 8Mb, everything is smooth sailing. If I select 32Mb, I get lots of freezes or resets when other apps (such as Versamail) do something in the background. I have about 25Mb free on my Treo. There is a file (j9secpol.prc, I think) you can download that will pre-certify the JVM to use your internet connection so that you don't have to re-authorize Opera every time you use it. However, this seemed to cause instability (Versamail stopped being able to access my Exchange server) and suddenly I was looking at pages in a different language (Swedish?). The issues may have been unrelated, but after hard resetting (ahem), I have not reinstalled that file and those issues have not returned. I continue to enjoy FontSmoother--the ability to get more text (and eye-pleasing text at that) on the screen makes Opera Mini and Blazer both much better.
