MAJOR phone problems with 755p/Sprint

I've had my 755p for a couple of months now, and this is getting FRUSTRATING:

My Treo "forgets" that it has 3 or more bars of signal strength, and the phone portion is totally unresponsive, several times a day! A friend of mine also has one and has the exact same problem. Palm apps work fine, and it gives no indication of a problem until you try to make a call, then it is clear that the phone is not working. (Sometimes you can tell that something's wrong because the screen is slow and unresponsive.) A reboot (removing the battery) usually fixes it, or powering the radio off and on (which is slower), but not always. And there are probably 5 voicemails from angry friends and coworkers who don't understand why you have been ignoring their calls for the last 3 hours. Has anyone else experienced this?

Is this a known 755p problem? A Sprint problem? Or just a defective batch of phones?

I've had several older Treos in the past, and I wanted EVDO, which as a big reason to get this one, but I've never had one so unreliable. Yes, I did a hard reset, wiping the whole thing clean, and I renamed my backup directory first so that no third party apps are on it at all (only my contacts and calendar DBs). I removed the miniSD card and still no change.

Argh, this is SO frustrating! If anyone can recommend a solution, I will be eternally grateful!

(I'm new to this forum, and I didn't know what to search for here, so please excuse me if this question has already been asked - just point me to the appropriate thread if it's redundant!)

I get that same issue with my 700P. However, I notice it when my signal from the tower is messed up. Ex: I am driving from a Place that I am roaming. I loose signal then enter a Sprint Network. Where the signal is weekest on the Sprint Network, I have this issue. At one point all six bars are showing, the screen locks and I can't connect a phone call. The bars drop down to 1 and so forth.

Where this happens to you, do you have a good signal? Tall buildings, surrounding mountains, etc.?

I have expereinced this in the past with my 650 on Cingularly ATT Like you it seems to be in areas of spotty service in rural areas and kind of in between towers maybe at close to maximum range. So its probaly a siganl strength roaming between in you guys case between Sprint VZN Alltel towers

Sorry to hear that, but I have been with Sprint for over 7 years now and have no issues regarding signal strength or phone issues. I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and no issues. I've used it in the mountains during winter and summer months and no issues where other people with then Cingular and more recently T-mobile had signal strength problems. Coworkers of mine living in Riverside County (Dessert Communities about 70 miles southeast of L.A.) have problems with Verizon. In fact I've been able to get reception everywhere I've been. Maybe I've had probably 3 or 4 dropped calls since I've been with Sprint but I've had signal strength during those calls. Without trying to be bias, I've thinking it was the other network. So far, I've haven't had any problems with the 755. I haven't had any problems with my previous Samsung, Motorola, LG, Sanyo phones either. I seriously doubt its the network.

If you had the phone for a few weeks, I would recommend swapping it out with a new one. Maybe a bad batch? But since you had it a couple months I don't know what warranty issues or insurance issues you would have to deal with. Good luck.

Chris

Try this

Try wrapping the Treo's antenna in something that would allow it to pick up the signal better. Better yet wrap up most of the treo!

I too have been with Sprint many years (going on 5) going from Samsung SPH-i500 to Treo 650 to the 755p and have not had any reception issues. While it's not the Rockies or Cascades, I do live in the Ozark Mountain region of SW Missouri - nothing but hills and lakes in the surrounding area - and get great coverage virtually everywhere around here.

This actually just happened to me today. I was at home where I get 4 bars and when I got a call in the phone wouldn't pick up at all. Then it was ok for a bit but when I tried to dial out it would say "dialing" but there would be no ringing and it would go back to my contact menu. I decided to reboot and all is fine now. Hope this is not a sign of things to come. He's my best buddy!

In addition to the signal bar, I read somewhere in the user manual that you've to notice the colors the 2 VERY SMALL triangels to the top right of the signal bar. If I remember correctly, gray and blue triangles mean that you have both phone and internet/email signals. Green triangles mean you only have internet/email but no phone service as long as you're using internet/emails, even there are 3 or 4 signal bars present. It has something to do with the phone/internet networks of Sprint. Hope this helps.

It also has to do with Palm OS's non multitasking nature. It can handle only voice or data at once, not both at the same time.

In the process of selling my 650s. It hurts but at least they'll be getting used.

I've always known that the Palm OS didn't multitask, but never knew what the green or gray triangles meant (I just call 'em squiggles) ... Dennis has been trying to tell me something all along!
