New Treo, questions about contacts/software/internet. - Treo Forum

I used to previously use a Keyocera phone (believe its a KX21 or something along those lines, has a full flipout keyboard) and just upgraded to a 700WX today. I have browsed this site prior to buying, and while it was shipping and have found quite a bit of good info on here.

One issue I have is Alltel could not get my contacts off my Keyocera for some reason..I'll try the "bigger" local store tomorrow n see if they have any luck. Sounds like there's something wrong with my phone internally on the circuit board if it won't connect? Assuming software/hardware of the reader is up to par?

Is there any way to add contacts as an uploaded feature? As in..type them into an excel file on my computer then upload them into the Treo..any way to do this? Looking for an alternative to typing them all in by hand on the tiny keyboard..don't have a small bluetooth keyboard or anything, and really wouldn't have much use for one..so don't want to buy one just to do that menial task

Software...I bought the 700wx used, and have no software. Is there a place to download the full compressed file so I can get all the original Palm software for my PC?

Waiting on a download right now from Alltel Customer Service. The phone says i'm roaming even though I'm in my normal range. They said I needed the updated software...we'll see how that works.

Internet-Can't get it to work, is there any place to know what network settings to dial out? I'm on a group plan with internet, text, my circle, etc...so this is all included.

Edit:Also, I seem to not be able to find a free data encryption type tool. There has to be one out there? I'm looking to save confidential information, financial information, passwords, etc.

Do you have Microsoft Outlook? If so and your contacts are in it, you can sync them from your PC to your phone. I believe you can import them from a Excel file into Outlook, but you'd need Outlook to sync.

Got my internet to work, after quite a bit of finagling with Alltel customer service. I do have Outlook 2003. My contacts aren't in it currently, as my old phone was just a normal "phone", and not a smart phone. I can type them into outlook pretty easily it looks like, so I may just go that route, i'll try one more time to transfer my 1-200 numbers before i undergo typing

I'm having issues having my phone sync up to my computer..I have active sync on my phone, and computer..but whenever i plug the data cable+power cable into my phone.

I'll keep playing with things. Got Outlook linked with my Army Knowledge Online email....so got half the battle done

I cannot get the WX to sync at all with my computer..with data cord plugged in..or anything, can't find it via bluetooth on my computer..or windows mobile device center....can't recognize either on either pieces..anything I should do? Update? This is frustrating

check and make sure that your mobile device name and you synch settings are properly set.

Can you give an example? I think my name is just "treo" and cant get anythign to recognize eachother even with different COM ports...

when i try to D/L the new one here (I believe there was an older version of active sync on my computer when i got it?) then it says it can't be installed on Vista.

Ahhh, yes you need to use a different app, Windows Mobile Device Center, available here

As a warning, don't be surprised if you have issues w/ WMDC as well. There've been a number of threads on this and related sites regarding connectivity issues. I've had my 700WX since September and have yet to be able to sync it w/ my Vista based laptop, in spite of the posts I've made on this and other sites and hours spent w/ Tech Support. In light of all of this, you may want to consider a back up program, such as Sprite or SPB Backup
