![]() | TomTom GPS Hello, I have some questions about getting a tomtom 6 receiver and software for my Treo: first, if it's compatible with the Treo 700 or 700w, does that mean it's compatible with my 700wx? Also, my main criteria is a system that doesn't use up data with my provider because, here in Canada, you can't get unlimited data packages, and the price is about $50 a meg (really)! So I need a GPS system that has the maps on the SD card and uses the receiver to pinpoint my locations on the maps, without using a data download. Also, I want to be able to use it as a speedometer on the motorbike and in the boat - does the tomtom package do that (I read that it will warn you if you're speeding in the car, so I assume that means it's a speedometer too)? Thanks for any info or personal experience you can offer. |

| Regular Contributer ![]() | If something is compatible with 700W, it will be with the WX as well, they are the same device (WX having twice as much memory of course). As far as the 'speedometer' idea, you have the correct idea, but it works a bit differently. The TomTom (to the best of my knowledge) does not have this built in, but you can (or will be released in the future) have something comperable. Here is a little reading I found that may be of interest to you: Radar Detectors and GPS Speed Warning Devices |

| Junior Member ![]() | Welcome to the Forum! ![]() I have used TomTom 6 on my Treo 700wx. It functions well on the device. The main program is installed on your device, which takes up roughly about 5Mb. The data, which includes the maps, resides on the SD card. Hint: You can move the main program to the SD card, by editing the registry, and it still functions well. TomTom does have features to allow you to use a data package, which is TomTom Plus. This includes obtaining local traffic info, locating other TomTom 6 users (buddy list), weather info, Speedcam alert, etc. You can disable this feature. TomTom does have a little speedometer on the main screen, though it is small. You can display the time, time to destination, speed, and current time on the main screen, which is displayed on the right corner. The only function of the speedometer is just to measure your current speed, there are no alarms to notify you if you are speeding. There is a function to alert you of speedcams, but I believe this requries TomTom Plus (data package). I was not able to test this, because, from my understanding, the North America map does not have this data. Last edited by crazie.eddie; 05-04-2008 at 09:54 AM. |

![]() | In touch with the Inner GPS? Thanks to crazie.eddie and syrguy1969 for the responses. This info was exactly what I was looking for, but it brings on another question: what are the GPS capabilities that come with the 700wx? In System/Settings there is a GPS app with 3 tabs (Programs, Hardware, Access). I played with some of these settings when I borrowed a buddy's Magellan 10 receiver (no maps software), but I couldn't get anything to work. My other buddy's Crackberry has a full-blown GPS system like crazie.eddie was describing - all built in (his is a company perk, so he doesn't know if it's using data download, or what it costs). Any chance my Treo can do that by just having some maps software on an SD card? Without using my data package? If not, that's the reason I'm looking for a receiver/maps system. Correction to my original post: the cost of data in Canada is about $8 a meg. I mentioned $50 in my last post, 'cause that's how much overcharge I incurred (over and above my 30meg package) in my first 2 weeks of having my new Treo. Scary! |

| Junior Member ![]() | The 700wx does not have a consumer usable GPS, except for what is required for E911 services. Therefore, a BT or SD GPS receiver is required. I use the OnCourse Bluetooth GPS Receiver Edition 3 BT receiver with my Treo700wx. Once paired, I setup an outgoing serial connection (Com: 8). Under GPS, in the hardware tab, I also setup Com: 8 and set the speed to the highest setting. I think OnCourse recommends 38400, but it haven't found any issues at the max speed. You can still use TomTom without requiring data access. As long as you don't use TomTom Plus services or traffic info, then it will not require data access. |
