Palm SDIO Wi-Fi Card on 700w through verizon - Treo Forum

Does anyone know if you absolutely must carry the verizon data and internet package when using the Palm SDIO wifi card.

I want to connect to the private network at my office. But i dont want to get killed with extra charges and monthly fees.

I have only had this phone for a couple days and I look forward to joining the ranks of the Treonauts!

welcome to treonauts buckeyedg I dont have verizon but I have a 750 I have a limited data plan right now I can receive but nt send text messages and I do not use the internet very much just for doenloading ota programs.

I am going out on a limb and saying you are either an Ohio State fan or are from Ohio!

The treo was a gift/hand me down from my future father in law, and I really have no idea how to use it yet.. I'm getting the mobile office stuff for it tomorrow

I'm just drilling my budget down hard right now, and while i want to get the most out of my new gadget, I dont want to pay for every fee that verizon can dream up...

Understandably. Verizon has some high data prices. I don't see why you couldn't just use the wifi card. It should work fine.

I called verizon tech support and they were all but completely ignorant to the existence of the SDIO wi-fi card from palm..

After going round and round with them, they told me that I would still need to have their service because my 700w wasnt built to used for wifi access.

Even though in my "configure network adapters" menu, it clearly has the "wifi sdio" option (among a few others)... I just didnt want to buy the 80dollar adapter to have it not work...

I am pretty sure they were just trying to muscle me into a bigger contract for a data plan...

I have a 700w with verizon and use the WiFi card without having their data service. I works fine. The phone wants to dial into the data service from time to time so I put a bogus number in there and it has stopped trying to connect.

I had a 650 and now use a 700w, both with Verizon and I used and use both on my wireless network. Since you're not connecting to Verizon's service, you won't be charged. Don't let them BS you into taking their high priced data package.

I have the TREO 700wx with Verizon and use the Spectec WIFI card.
I purchased the phone second-hand to replace another phone, and told them I did NOT want the data plan.
Sure enough, a month later, the data plan was charged on my bill. I made them take it off.
They have no problem with that, but you need to check up on them the first few months you have it to make sure they don't add it on.
Verizon assumes that all Treos will come with the data plan.

Just to reiterate....

Using a WiFi card will not incur VZW data charges. But if you are at a hotspot (i.e. Starbucks, etc.) that charges for internet access, you will have to pay them for the useage.

Second, Text Messages (SMS) do not use data, rather they use the cellular line control channel (the always-on wireless link between your phone and cell tower that manages what tower you are using and how your phone gets alerted of an incoming call and from there is assigned which frequencies to use in the call) as the pathway to send and receive data packets. To save bandwidth and reduce network overloads and message delays, the messages are limited to 160 characters.

Hey two_wheeled which specific Spectec WIFI card do you use with your phone. I have been wanting to get one of their microSDIO WiFi Cards but cant find info on compatibility for using it with the 700wx.
