No headphone volume

Folks, looking for a little help on this one. I've just recently picked up a replacment 700wx, and am finding I can't hear anything through the headphones. I've tried two different pair, with no results. I think they are plugging in correctly (as I can hear that little crackling sound when they plug in), but after that, nada. I can hear Windows Media just fine through the regular speaker, but nothing through the headphone jack.

Am I missing something easy here?

And these worked fine with a previous 700wx?

Was the replacement unit new or a refurb?

Brand new, as far as I know. I got the replacement at the Sprint store.

I assume you have checked the volume settings etc. Maybe the headset jack has a loose connection or the wires are disconnected somehow but it would not be making a crackling sound unless you have an intermittent short. Very strange.
