Question Alltel vs. Verizon 700wx

I'm planning to buy a Treo. After doing some shopping, I've narrowed my choices to the 700wx. I was about to sign up w/ Alltel, but now am concerned that their wx isn't really as capable as the Verizon wx that I've heard the most about. For instance, Verizon claims their wx is compatible with BT stereo (A2DP), but Alltel says theirs isn't. (I did see a forum post where somebody apparently upgraded their Alltel wx to handle BT stereo, but, being a newbie at this, am uncertain how hard that would be to do and how reliable it would be.) Furthermore, this got me wondering if there are other ways where the Alltel wx is not really as good as the Verizon wx.

Can anybody provide any guidance on (1) how hard it would be to add BT stereo capabilithy to the Alltel wx and (2) if there are any other shortcomings to the Alltel phone I should be aware of?

Thanks!

PS: While shopping the Cingular 750 also looked pretty good, but didin't seem to be worth the extra money. I'm still open-minded about this, however, if anybody could describe any non-trivial advantages to it.

Well who is your carrier now and how much longer do you have on your contact? What king of coverage does alltel have in your area vs your current carrier? What is the cost of each phone you are looking at and what are you wanting to be able to do with the device? These are all questions you need to be able to answer to come to a decision. Have you tried playing with each device at the store? I switched to the 750 from the 650 and bought mine new on ebay with no contract and only paid $383.00 including shipping. Its been great so far.

All good questions!

My current carrier is Alltel, but I have already met my contract commitment, and my phone numbers (for wife and myself) are portable, so I'm pretty free to switch. I've had no issues with the Alltel network in this area, but Verizon also seems to be good here, as is Cingular/ATT, at least as reported by my friends who have phones on those networks.

My monthly charges would be about $25/month less on Alltel than on either Verizon or Cingular, which really adds up and dwarfs the differences in the costs of the phones, themselves. Seems like a pretty good deal, as long as i don't find myself with a phone that is deficient in some significant way.

Phone would actually be used by my wife, who was looking to replace an old PDA that we can't get to place nice with Windows XP, and is pretty antiquated anyway. She was also wanting to replace her cellphone with a camera phone, and has been finding her very old mp3 player to be insufficient (only 128MB). I know she hates carrying around a bunch of devices, and it occurred to me that a Treo would help with each of her needs, plus give her some additional functionality she would appreciate (such as checking her email remotely, etc.).

I thought the BT stereo would also be a nice touch, as she hates anything with cords/wires/etc. so she now listen to her mp3s w/o needing the typical wires connecting to the headphone. If this is the only thing we lose with the Alltel wx, then that's OK. Not worth $25/month to her to have cordless stereo headphones vs. traditional corded ones. I just want to make sure that there aren't other shortcomings I will later come to discover that makes me wish I had opted for either Verizon or Cingular/ATT.

Thanks

PS: Haven't played much with any of these in the stores. This sort of device is new to me, so whatever i would try would likely be the most basic functions that work well on all devices.

My Verizon 700w has a signal strength of two bean cans and a string. Verizon has sent me 4 of them now in the last couple of months and I'm still having the same problem. The signal meter bounces between 0 and 3 all the time and it constantly drops calls.

That's got to be maddening! It sounds like you have either has a bad run of bad phones as far as QC is concerned or there is a big network problem with VZN in your area.

Well the 700P fixed my signal problem for some reason but now I'm limited to the things my 700P won't do that my 700W did.
