Can you mix and match GPS receivers with software??

Just wondering if I can buy any brand GPS receiver and couple that with software?

If anyone knows, what do you recommend? I'm trying to keep this under $125 total if possible. Any free software out there, or existing map software that can interact with a GPS receiver?

To a certain extent yes, there are two main protocols used by GPS receivers NMEA and SiRF. Most GPS receivers support both but default to one or the other and need to be switched via software. GPS software can support either both or only one depending on the manufacturer and version.

If you want real time routing then you'll have to buy the software, the map data they use costs money

Thanks - A few more quick questions..

So, in order to give me directions real time, I'd need to purchase the software? Something like Google Maps for mobile phones wouldn't work?

Google Maps for mobile doesn't support GPS navigation, yet. Will it in the future? Who knows? If it does, it will probably be a pay feature like it is on Google Earth.
