Google Maps - maps, search, satellite images

Hi,

I am a new Treo user, and noticed here that a lot of people are asking about mapping and Google Earth software. Google has a portable version of their map software that downloads maps as needed, can do a search (like in Google local), provide directions, view traffic and satellite images. (You can't view the hybrid images though like you can on the full-blown version of Google maps online.) If you have a GPS sensor it can also provide location data based on the GPS signal.

It took me a while to find it because if you go to maps.google.com on the PDA it does not show up, it just says your device is not supported. You need to go to to Google Maps (which you can use on your PC to read about the program or download the CAB.)

My questions is whether there is any way to give the Google program access to the internal GPS receiver in the phone? The Sprint people told me that their mapping software does not work on the PocketPC phones, and that I have to use other software... but now that I have other software they can't help me from there. I assume that the Sprint mapping software uses the internal GPS sensor, so I am not sure why I can't get the Google software to use it. Any suggestions? Am I crazy to think this would work?

There isn't a GPS receiver built into your Treo, Sprint's navigation system uses the cellular towers to triangulate your position. It works but it's not as accurate as a proper GPS receiver.
