How to Convert My Sprint 700wx to a Verzion 700wx - Treo Forum

Currently I work for Sprint Nextel and have the treo700wx. Due to the merger, we believe that they will be closing our store in a month. Therefore no more free plan. LOL. So I need to switch to verizon because sprint does not work at my house and I refuse to pay for service that I cant use. Now here’s my question.

Both Sprint and Verizon offer the Treo 700wx. Everything seems to be the same. Except for the branding on the phone itself. I’ve been selling cell phones for about 5 years and know about the towers and frequencies. Both Sprint and Verizon run off of CDMA 850 / CDMA 1900 and 1xRTT/1xEV-DO for the internet and features.

So does anybody know if I can use my Sprint 700wx on Verizon? I am trying to stay away from signing a two contract. But I can easily sell my sprint one and get the verizon one on eBay and break even.

When I was selling my 6700 on Ebay, an article came out (I read it on Engadget) that stated that it would be now illegal for carriers to lock out tranferring phones from one carrier to another (with the obvious restrictions of compatible formats; CDMA or GSM). It went by the idea that you paid for the phone seperate of the contract, so if you bring a paid for phone to a different contract, it was still yours and they would have to allow you to use it on their contract.

Chances are, any Salesman you talk to will try to feign ignorance of this new law (hard to make commission without a sale), so you might want to try digging up the article just in case they try to hassle you. Actually, if the Salesman doesn't help you, just ask for the Manager and explain this. They are more likely to know and are less likely to want to get sued.

Take the phone to a sprint store and ask them to unlock it.

sprint is starting to have to unlock phones

The worst they can tell you is no. If they do say no, just go the eBay route.

I've never swapped carriers on the same platform, but my understanding is that only GSM phones are locked to their originating carriers. So, any CDMA handset should work on either VZ or Sprixtel, all they need is the ESN number. That ESN is the identifier (similar to the SIM card in a GSM handset).

I'd take your 700wx to the VZW store & verify that with Technical Support and NOT the sales person.
