Windows Mobile 6 - Treo Forum

Just incase anyone was interested, Windows Mobile 6 is finally coming out. You can read about it on Engadget: Windows Mobile 6 announced - Engadget

They have started posting pics of it in action as well.

So far the feature I really like is that it will be able to display html emails. Oh, and there it is far more compliant with Vista, ofcourse. There is a rumour that you can upgrade with your current WM5, but I'll only dance when I see it.

I think upgrading a Treo would be unlikely because of the customizations done by Palm. Unless of course Microsoft included all their customizations in this new release. I guess we'll find out once it's actually available.

I agree, but Palm would obviously make that upgrade for Treos themselves. Whether it would take over what is hardwired into the phone is another story. We shall see..

Palm would definatly have to make it themselves, and even then it might take a while. As nice as it would be, I'd be willing to bet we'll see a new WM6 model Treo available before they come out with an OS upgrade. They have to weigh the options of stuffing a new OS in an "old" (I know its still pretty new....) or building a device around the new OS. I wonder what contraints, if any, they might have to deal with trying to put the new OS in the 700w/wx.

And let's not forget the all mighty dollar. They might not want to make it available so that some kids would go out and buy an all new phone just to get at the newer OS. These kids aren't rich by accident, ya know...

If Palm decided to offer an existing upgrade path from WM 5, I would have to know more about how much memory it would require. Not being a fan of Vista, and it's vast HW requirements, I wonder how my 700w bretheren would handle it. Even my 700wx might not handle it. If it's anything like Vista, it wouldn't run well on exsiting handhelds. Still some exciting news, at least they're moving on it, rather than letting it go stagnant like Palm OS.

I think this is exactly like Vista. It doesn't matter if you like it or not, it's what you're getting. It might not be today, might not be tomorrow, but one day you will own Vista. And you will have a WM6 phone too.

Palm haven't historically offered OS upgrades for their phones so it's unlikely they will start now. If they did there would be a cost attached as I'm sure Microsoft will want paying for all those new licenses

Personally I hope there is going to be an update to this. But I'm not sure if it will be as likely for 700 users as it will be for 750 users. Perhaps this is the reason for holding back on the launch of the 750w in North America. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that there will be an update; but I really don't mind wm5, and upgrade would be a very nice change "cosmetically"
