Install Problem with PalmDesktopWin62.exe

Every time I try to install this, it dies with:

Error 1316: A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\Palm Desktop and Synchronization Software.msi

I'm running a new Dell Inspiron with Vista Home Basic.

I've tried re-downloading and re-installing a few times, no difference. Can anyone offer any suggestions, or maybe even a whole solution??

Right click and run as administrator perhaps. I've only used Vista Ultimate and Corporate, so I can't say for sure

OK, now this is getting weird...

I completely erased & un-installed PalmDesktopWin62 from my system, and downloaded Palm Desktop 4.1.4. Ran as Administrator.

It failed with exactly the same error message.

You should be running 4.1.4 anyways since 6.2 isn't recommended for the 600. I really can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. Unless, are you running the 64bit version of Vista?

Nop. I'm running the simplest, crudest, 32-bit version of Vista. Oh, and I'm trying to migrate from my 600 to a 700p - so I started with PalmDesktop62, but when that wouldn't work, I thought "OK, I'll try Desktop 4.1.4 because that's compatible with the 700p too" but of course it won't work either.

So, no, I'm still buggered.

try using this. it's an installer cleanup ute from micro$oft and it might work for you.

Thanks, Brandon. I tried that, and was at least able to get Desktop 4.1.4 installed, which then proceeded to correctly sync with my old 600 under Vista - great, now my whole reason for buying a 700p is gone! :-)

But when I tried to install WinDesktop62, it failed again - different symptoms, though: it got to the point where it asked if I wanted a shortcut on the desktop. I clicked on "Yes" and it flashed some error message up for 2 nanoseconds, and then proceeded to roll back the installation, saying I had cancelled it (which, of course, I did not)

I went through this routine a few times, and eventually tried un-checking the "Download latest settings?" box, and then clicking "No" to a desktop icon (quite capable of doing it myself, thank you very much). Surprise, surprise, it finished the installation.

So, now, at least, I have the correct Desktop installed. BUT - see my "Transfer PIM data" thread for the other half of this story!
