| A Few Questions.... ![]() | Treo 700p Performance Issues We recently rolled out 25 700p's in my corporation with Verizon as our service provider. We are using the Intellisync enterprise software for Exchange synchronization. We are experiencing some consistent locks ups and freezing issues. And, a few cases where the phone got in a loop of continuously rebooting. Hard resets took care of the rebooting, but I am concerned it will happen more. My typical end user cannot perform a hard reset, then reprogram the server IP to re-sync all their data. The lock ups and freezes are a significant frustration for our users. The phone is slow to move between apps. When it does pause, they will hit a button or the screen a couple times thinking it did not take their command, and that seems to exacerbate the problem. We are transitioning from Blackberries where lock-ups, freezes, and slowness were never a problem. Verizon's response is that no one else is reporting these types of issues. So, I am curious if anyone else has the same experience thus far. Perhaps it is the enterprise sync software? Perhaps it is the OS platform? We have not installed any custom apps, so I do not believe that would be a culprit. I'll appreciate any exchange of thoughts and ideas. pete |

I looked into the two options for Wireless Sync: Enterprise Wireless Sync (server based) and Basic Wireless Sync (20 users max per computer). My needs are 50 to 60 Treo users who need to sync our corporate Lotus Notes email and calendar. The Enterprise version required a server, annual licenses, a seemingly complex setup, and other operational costs. I didn't like the recurring costs and the complicated setup (largely due to the fact that we already had 4 users setup on the basic software). The basic Wireless Sync setup only allows you to have 20 Treo users on a single computer. So, this meant I would need 3 computers to handle my 50 to 60 users. The setup of the software is very easy and hasn't caused me a single issue after over a year. My environment for Wireless Sync: 3 new HP rack servers (low end): 80GB SATA hard drive, 2GB RAM, Windows 2003 Server OS Installed Wireless Sync (basic free version) on all three servers with one active Lotus Notes account running 24/7 (dummy account on all 3) Users have mix of 650, 700p, and 700w Servers run 24/7 and are restarted once a week or so. Why go this route? The servers didn't cost all that much, plus they can be used for most anything else we need. Wireless Sync's free version takes up very little space or resources, even with the full 20 users. Also, should one of these servers crash or need to be rebuilt for some reason, setting up the Wireless Sync again will only take me an hour without any loss of data. The only data really being used is a copy of each user's Notes ID file. Over time, I will have saved a lot more money and had the ability to get more use out of my 3 lower end servers. My first few users had this environment: A secreatary's desktop computer had Wireless Sync (free version) installed and computer was left running 24/7 Windows 2000 Pro With all that said, we have no issues with Wireless Sync or Treo crashes/freezes and the only negative aspect so far is that running this app on the Treo phones taxes the battery a little more. Once in a long while, one of our users will report that they are not receiving new emails, but a simple Soft Reset fixes that problem immediately. I would say there may be an issue with the Enterprise version slowing the Treos down. You've already committed to the Enterprise option, but I would recommend trying the free option (which can be done with literally any computer that has an Internet connection and a little free HD space. Sorry you're having such a bad time. Wish I could give you specific answers, but hopefully my explanation will shed a little light on this. Oh yeah........one other BIG reason we didn't go with Enterprise. Verizon Wireless (our only cellular carrier) does not support Enterprise Wireless Sync, as it is supported by an outside third party. This is a problem for me. I did not want to have Treo problems down the road and find Verizon and this third party both pointing the finger at each other when a Sync problem happened. If Verizon provided 100% support for the Enterprise version, it would have added more weight to that option (but probably not enough for us). Last edited by Car Nut; 08-10-2006 at 03:02 PM. | |

![]() | Hmmm, nope, don't think you blame it on the sync software.... I had similar problems as a solo, personal, user. I got one of the very first rolled out by Verizon and took it back within two weeks because it kept crashing into a continuous reset loop that I could only break with a hard reset. And this was happening at least once a day! So, they gave me another one... SAME PROBLEM! So then I spent another several weeks going around in circles with Verizon, Palm and several 3rd party software companies trying to figure out where the conflicts were. And even now I can't tell you. All I know is that after one of the hard resets I varied the way I reloaded my programs and made sure I had the latest updates and suddenly everything is "fine". Yeah, it still crashes now and again, but at least it goes into a standard soft reset and then pops back up like it's supposed to. So, not perfect, but I can live with it. Wish I could provide more constructive advice, but at least you know you're not alone! Good luck & happy Treo-ing. |

| A Few Questions.... ![]() | Thanks for the posts! The interaction is very helpful. I am glad to know I am not the only one experiencing it. Since I posted the original, I have had two more people experience the reboot loop. And, most of my users are complaining about performance. But, through some experimentation, I have some additional thoughts. After the hard reset to my device to clear the reboot loop, I have not had the problem, and that was almost 4 weeks ago. Same for the other cases. We have changed the Wireless Sync settings on the Treo from "Push" to sync either at 2 hour intervals or 4 hour intervals. That has seemed to help on two fronts. First, much better performance moving between applications. Less latency and pausing. Second, much better battery life. Still not the same as a Blackberry, but MUCH better. Also, we have found that battery life suffers significantly from bluetooth. So, we have encouraged all of our people to leave bluetooth off if they do not use it. pete |

| A Few Questions.... ![]() | One of the challenges I have run into with turning BT off when not needed is I have to soft reset after I turn BT back on so the Treo will pair with either the BT car kit or headset. Palm still has not answered my last case on this. I have opted for now to leave BT on and have not seen a huge battery issue but at my office my phone is typicall off. Another way to get additional battery is with an extd battery like the Seidio 2400 mAh battery, it will give them a little extra at the end. |
