Treo 700p great so far

I upgraded from the 650 a couple months ago to te 700p and love it.

I've noticed these good things:

- faster response opening programs, quicker resarts
- Verizon-supplied music app is much better
- Music app actually organizes music automatcally in several ways
- SD card reads faster
- EVDO......uh.....absolutely awesome.
- The default home page was just updated and has more links to PDA friendly sites.

The bad:

- batter life is lower, but then again EVDO and my Wireless Sync are frequently active
- Music app skipped a lot under all circumstances, until I turned off a couple default options.
- Voice dialing software (third party) only worked on the 650. Now I've got to find a replacement.

Last week I figured out how to make my own WMA ringtones, so that's got my attention now.

What does everyone else like/dislike about the 700p?

Welcome to the forums Car Nut,

I'm eagerly awaiting my 700p (Sprint) and currently using my 650 til then. Looking forward to the 128mb ram for those apps and their data I can't stick on the sd card.

I'm always curious about quoted battery lives... what sort of real world battery life are you experiencing with your 700p?

WMA ringtones huh? Interesting. I wonder if you'd mind posting how you did it?

Regards

Steph

Let us know what you find and if you like it.

So far I am enjoying the switch to the 700p from a Samsung 'flipstyle' Palm i500. Boy do I miss the built in voice dial, flip style and small pocketable phone ... BUT the new Treo 700p has a lot to offer too. Its my first move from graffi and I'm now finally enjoying 'thumbing' messages. (something I just didn't do before) Text entry is just so much better. I can now actually manage to get a few emails looked at and replied too when away from a computer.

I also like the added memory with the SD card. It does a great job in holding a bunch of podcasts so I can listen on the go or in the car. PTunes is pretty good although I'd like to see a little more intergrated management of files. What utilities for file managment are you guys using???

The camera is certainly better than 90% of the US cell phones but still way short of anything more than a gadget. I'm planning to upload daily photos directly from my phone to my blog in real time next week. (if Sprint coverage holds in Hawaii) Check it out and see if they look as good on the computer screen as on the Palm. (something that is hard to tell when you are in the sun and looking at a small screen with 40+ year old eyes. ) Also I'll see how the battery holds up on the 8+ hour flight running PTunes ... and yes bought a second Seiko extended life from Treonauts just in case.

I'm still having difficulty with my Jabra JX10 'bluetoothed' to my 700p ... I pick up every pin drop and water drip for miles. This makes for a very 'old school' conference phone sound for people on the other end and is extremely poor when driving. Maybe its just me ... but after talking with Jabra they wouldn't do anything about it suggesting that I don't use in in a noise environment. (I put on a $45 Motorola 'cockroach' looking headset and the blue tooth worked fine. )

All in all I'm trying to be fair to the new Treo. It like replacing an old faithful dog (my i500) ... the new pup (Treo) is just going to have to earn my love.

Cool

I got a 700P (Sprint) and I love it i never owned a smart phone before but have used my coworkers 650 a few times and i love the speed that the 700 has in comparison. The buttons took a little while to get used to but i think i'm finally over it.

My Default Home page is set to SprintPCS Vision. i havent looked into trying to change that cause there are alot of different sites i would choose over the current one but hey who knows.

Memory wise i have not had to use my SD card for any apps yet. all are stored on the phone with plenty of room to spare. only thing on my card are pictures of the family and my resume along with a few other items.

i tried Voice Dialing from the Palm site but took it off cause it just wasnt worth it and i couldnt activate it from my bluetooth headset. (why would i want a voice dial program that i have to activate using the phone.

Other than that i have had no problems with the Treo and am loving it.

Battery life:

I can run out the battery in about 24-36 hours, but that's largely due to the actvite services on my phone. I use Wireless Sync for my corporate email/calendar and it is set to send me new emails/calendar immediately (not on a scedule), so my Treo syncs several times an hour. I also have Bluetooth running all day long, so that zaps a little more battery life. I've found that Internet browsing does not seem to tax the battery at all. As long as I charge the Treo for a couple hours each day, I'm good to go. Since I have the Treo at my desk at work, I usually just leave it on the charger until I go somewhere.

One last thing. I only get 1 or 2 signal bars at my house. When phones are fighting for a signal, the battery will be used up quicker. I have significant battery loss at my houseovernight when NO calls and NO emails were received/sent.

Since my company just bought the 700p for me, I'm going to wait a couple more months and then have them get me the extended life battery.

WMA Ringtones:

I actually just followed the info given on the blog (Treonaut's home page). I use WavePad software to edit my MP3s into the actual ringtone by cutting out the music I don't need. When saving the file, the software will convert it to WMA, so I use the Radio Quality setting to keep the file smaller. About 30 seconds of music ends up around just under 1MB. The final step is to email that file to my corporate email so that my Treo gets the email. I download the attachment and when done, the Treo asks me to give the file a name and automatically recognizes the files as a ringtone.

I started getting good ideas for ringtones using some of my favorite music CDs, so I had Real Player (basic free version) save the music tracks as MP3s and then opened them in WavePad. Very cool and the sound quality is very clear. You can even adjust the volume of the ringtone in WavePad, just in case the song isn't loud enough. It might take you a couple tries to get the ringtone just right, but no big deal. I only really needed two good ones, so I'll use them for now and create new ones when I get tired of them.

i have a sprint 700p also and i love it, i had a sidekick 2 before the upgrade and theres no comparison the 700 blows that out of the water except for the keyboard, but im getting use to it. i have had it for about 2 month and the evdo speed is fantastic, the phone downloads emails so fast. you notice the difference when you leave a evdo area and in 1xRTT like i did when i visited my parents in syracuse, ny where there is no power vision guess im getting spoiled.

Sprint tv use to soft reset my phone occasionally but that hasnt happen in weeks, this is my first bluetooth phone but i havent had problems paring it with my motorola hs850. Love streaming radio through radio-locater.com but kinoma player soft resets the phone sometimes which is annoying but i can deal with that.
