Question Warranty & Service - Cingular vs Palm?

Hi! Given that we probably won't be able to get the 680 from a B&M Cingular before hubby goes out of town for work again, and the sucky $40/month data plan Cingular insists you sign up for, I was thinking of getting our pair of Treos directly from Palm.

My only hesitation is that I won't have a local outlet to go to for service and warranty issues, since Cingular obviously won't support an unlocked Treo not purchased through them. Have people that have purchased unlocked Treos directly from Palm ever had any problems?

I've heard a lot of people say I just need to pop the SIM card into my new phone, but a Cingular csr told me to make sure my Treo had the software for Cingular. Is he just giving me a snow job, or is there something to that?

Thanks for any thoughts!!

i found this on palm's website. it covers the basic warranty for a 680. and from what i know about cingular, that csr was feeding you a pre-fabricated line.

The Cingular rep just wants to make sure that you get the rom software that they like to put on their phones. IMO it takes up space.

Just curious what their software is supposed to do? Is it just their branded logo and stuff like that?

Looks like there isn't any service advantage to Cingular

Thanks for the responses. I continued to ask more questions at Cingular, and it looks like there isn't any advantage service-wise to getting the phone through Cingular.

Waaaaaay back we were able to go to one of the major Cingular brick & mortar stores to get on-site tech assistance, but that is no longer the case. So we decided to get our 680s from Palm. We figured the extra $100 to get the unlocked was worth it to stay free of commitment to any one carrier and possibly being forced into one of their high price data plans.

Now we just have to figure out about handset insurance. Any thoughts?

Judy

Are there any ancillary config type settings that need to be set when you buy an unlocked phone to communicate with Cingular? Voicemail numbers, IP addresses and things they would preload on their own phones?

All that information is on your sim card. That's what makes GSM phones so handy when traveling.
