Should I replace my Treo650 with a 750, 680 or Tilt?

Hi all! This post to see if there is anyone who can tell me more regarding my questions:

I've used my Treo650 for 4 years on AT&T (replaced it 3 times!) & liked it pretty well, but the SLOW internet speeds & "mystery" reboots have been annoying. I also have had good luck using it as a laptop modem with PDAnet. Is the 750 worth the effort of learning a new OS? Does the 750 work well as a modem with PDAnet too? Are most of the core features similar, like the calendar, etc?

What I hoped is that there might be someone out there that has tried BOTH OS's and has a feel for how steep the learning curve is. I use the calandar to remind me of all the things I have to get done each day along with appointments. The one on my 650 is dirt simple to use & update. I've never used outlook for anything- I thought it was an e-mail program...

Anyone out there have any Palm vs WM6 input for me?

I need to replace my 650 ASAP. If it was GSM, I'd get a 755p and be happy, but they're only CDMA. I WAS trying to wait for the Treo850, but now I can't. (Many of the letter keys won't work anymore!) Who knows when the 850 will appear?? I'm going to look for a refurb to get me by until they do!

Would I be happy with the 750? Can I get to contacts, calendar or web with just 1 button press? Does it's lower resolution screen make a horrible difference?

I use my 650 as a phone first, and read posts from Freerange, cruise the web or listen to music. I USE the calendar a lot, stand alone. I've never even tried outlook... How hard is it to learn?

What it boils down to is the 680 I can use now with Palm desktop but slow web speed. Or the 750 with 3G but learn the new OS and Outlook... Opinions??

All advice gratefully taken!

Thanks!

scubafan I personally like my 750 I switched from the 650 about 19 20 months ago. Was leery about active synch from prior pocket pc purchases and installation but jumped in had no problems like before. The transition back to mindows mobile was easy for me. The choice for me would be between the os palm or windows mobile. I have heard that there is some dissatisfaction from some tilt users but your are going to have that. The advantages of the tilt would probably the wifi and gps over the 750. But the 850 is supposed to be out in September with a centro like style and wifi and gps. I will probably upgrade to that device. The 680 is on att and I personally if I was staying with or going back to palm os I would probably try the centro (I wish I could get it in the blue color that Verizon and the gsm in Mexico).

JFA, I wish I could wait until September! But even IF Palm actually has the 850 out by then, I can't live with the phone until then! The stupid thing ignores the use of nearly a dozen keys, so I can't enter websites or write even the simplest of memos...

The only reason I ever thought about the Tilt WAS the combo of GPS and WiFi. If it had a touchscreen and even just the number keys on the face I'd buy it in a flash. I just like being able to use my phone one handed, and I can't enter numbers on a screen by touch. I can't consider a Centro at all. No 3G and my hands are too big. I tried one out and had to use my nails to be sure of only hitting one key!

Having used several other smartphones running Windows Mobiles the Treo 750 is definetly the easiest to use. The changes Palm have made to the OS are not huge but they do make a big difference. PalmOS is still the easier of the two to use but the changes do make WM usable. Hardware wise the 750 is a much better than the 650 and the reason I upgraded mine.

There is a version of PDANet for Windows Mobile but WM6 has a built in facility for doing this.

I have stuck with the Palm OS due to the additional software I had on my 650before upgrading to the 680. Will probably have to go to Windows one day but perhaps in a year or two with the 850 subject to what it provides. Have had the 680 for a few weeks now and getting more comfortable with its screens etc. More than happy with the upgrade to it.

Or, cristan, you could do like me and mod the ROM for the purpose of world domination.

Ever consider a Treo 680 and stay with Palm OS? I've used and still use a Treo 600 (GSM) at work and also have for work a T-Mobile DASH (GSM) with WM 5.1 and WM is painful and slow. I just switch the SIM card and use whatever phone I want. The DASH does not have a touch Screen though which may make it painful to get around but it is much slower jumping from App to App under WM. The DASH does have a nice form factor and does fit in the pocket nicely and has WiFi which is always nice.

For personal use I just bought a Treo 755P (CDMA) a couple of weeks ago. I went with Alltel because in farm country where I live CDMA has the best coverage. It was a toss up on which carrier to go with but I've had an Alltel Prepaid phone for years and coverage with Alltel is very good. Plus their plan fit me best.

Had I decided to go with the a GSM phone I would have gotten a Treo 680. WM 5.X doesn't excite me all that much. I never used WM 6.X so maybe that actually is a bit more usable.

Geez, I just now read that the Centro is being sold unlocked. Maybe I would have thought about an unlocked Centro over a Treo 680 if going with GSM. The white doesn't thrill me though...

Had the Borg simply had mod 650s, we would all have those VW radiators pasted to our faces by now.

In any event, as far as I know, the GSM Centro is a small 680.
