Strange fault with 680, automatically opens HotSync which then can't be closed...

My Treo 680 has started opening HotSync unexpectedly and displaying the "connecting with the desktop using Cradle/cable" message. When I eventually get this to cancel, the message "The connecton between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again." is displayed. However, after clicking ok at this screen, the whole procedure starts over again. I'm not trying to sync (and usually sync by bluetooth anyway), so does anyone know what the problem could be?

(I had my phone with me for the last day of school a week ago, we got into a water fight in a park. Didnt have my phone on me, it was on a bench nearby with other valuables. Is it possible some water couldve somehow gotten up into the sync cable connector and is causing this problem? It only started doing this on that day, but I genuinely don't think any water could've gotten into it. It has since been left out to dry and is still doing this.)

It also now appears that menus and windows that are used to enter information instantly close after opening. For example, I completely reset the phone and got to the screen where it asks you to set up the language and then the time etc. When I select set manually, the menu will close before I have time to enter a time or choose a location. Definitely sounds like some sort of hardware issue to me.

Thanks.

Thanks, no I don't think I do. Tbh, I don't think I had any third party apps on it. Plus I did a ahrd reset and restored everything to default and it still does it regardless. (I use missing sync for Mac oSX though, if that helps any though it does sound slike something wrong with the actual treo itself.)

Since last week. I've had the battery out and been letting it dry for the entire week, even though I don't think there was water damage anyway. Don't suppose theres anything palm can do about repairing is there? I know they aren't exactly known for their amazing customer service lol. I already have a SE K800i as a replacement so I suppose its not really the end of the world, still £260 though =/

EDIT: I am only pay as you go with t-mobile, not a contract if that makes a difference. my knowledge of warranties and carriers is not great to say the least.

If you really suspect that water has entered the case, then try removing the battery and place the 680 on a warm, not blazing, window sill, about 1 hour per side Then reinstall the battery and see if you can HotSync with a cable/cradle instead of Bluetooth.

I have the same problem. Mine started when some water got into the hot sync connector. I love my phone and am lost without it. Does anyone know how to fix?

Yeah tried this (not only leaving the battery out and drying for one hour, but almost an entire week infront of a window sill) with strange results. When the Treo is connected to the Macbook via the cable, when it initially tries to sync (as soon as the phone starts it still automatically tries to sync) the sync will fail. However the phone now lets me cancel the sync properly. From there it does sync correctly when told to. When I did this several days ago the phone was relatively useable at this point WHILE connected to the macbook via cable, ocassionally HotSync opened again but could be cancelled easily. I'm doing this again now however and at this point, instead of becoming useable, the phone merely continues to constantly open HotSync which now does sync as it is connected via the cable.

Doesn't seem like theres much of a solution to this problem and from what you've suggested Treotosh, it also looks like I'm unable to get repairs or replacements from neither palm nor T-mobile =/

hmmm,
So it's not the battery, most likely just a part of hardware got wet, thats if the treo got really wet.
