I have noticed on some sites that the crimson Treo 680 is discounted as compared to the silver version. Is anyone aware whether the crimson colour chips off easier therefore is not a s favoured?

Well originally the silver model was originally the only one available from Cingular/at&t, while the colors were available from Palm only as unlocked. I believe that they changed that around, where the unlocked one was only available in silver and the colored ones were available from at&t.

Its just not as hot of a seller.
