hey
you guys have always helped me in the past, but problem is a beast. I can get past that my 680 will never sync with vista, I got past the gibberish sim card issue and it thinking a headset is plugged in when its not. But now all sounds and ringing work fine, yet when I answer a call I cannot be heard and I cannot hear, but speaker icon still appears on screen. So I know its not the headphone jack issue. I've done hard and soft resets and it will work normally once or twice after that, then it acts up. ATT and Palm support were of no help, of course. And the only way to restore info is through palm back up since hot sync never works. This is my fourth 680 in 15 months and I am near the end of my patience.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear you've had some much trouble with the 680, I'm not a Vista users but I've read that there are solutions/fixes so you can sync. But to the immediate problem, I'm suspicious of software that's installed. If you've got Butler, Phone Tech, VolumeCare, etc. installed, I'd look at their preferences/settings to see if you've got conflicts. Secondly, if you're trying to sync, albeit unsuccessfully, you maybe reinstalling the apps that are conflicting. So I'd recommend really stepping back and getting the Treo to HotSync, successful/clean/no errors, using a new Hotsync ID and a Hard Reset. Testing phone app and install new apps one at time. But most importantly with Palm OS has to HotSync to avoid these kind of issues. Hope this helps.

Like Cartogary, I suspect a preference conflict. However, the place I would start first, is looking at whether you have a Ringtone Manager installed. They are notorious for this issue. If you do, I would double check to ensure you have the most recent update (RingCare and one of the other ones updated their versions to take care of this issue). If its not that, then I would proceed with Cartogary's suggestions. You also might try putting a wired headset in the jack and pushing it in and pulling it out crisply, just in case.

wasnt there an audio update on the 680 sometimwe back? If that was not installed could that maybe be part of the problem as well?

Regarding the Treo thinking there is headset plugged in, it's likely due to damage to the solder joints in the jack. This is a common problem with Treos.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have managed to get it to sync with vista, but it stalls at "5 of 13 synchronizing address book. I have very few aftermarket programs installed and none involving ring tones. I have vindigo, weather, pda net, and I did the important update a few months ago that palm and att recommended. But as I said earlier, it is NOT the issue where the phone thinks the headphone is attached. The phone rings fine, but I cna hear and can't be heard. However, since getting it to sync for even only 5 steps seems to have stopped the problem for now. I bought and returned a blackberry curve. I dread the idea of typing on an iphone, so I really hope Palm introduces a new model for ATT soon. Due to the nature of my work, 90% of my communication is through texting, and nothing does it like a Treo.

Download a trial copy of TealScan from Tealpoint.com and scan your PIM data for corruption. Chances are your calendar will sync okay after that. Alternatively, you can set the calendar to do nothing during the sync and let it run all the way through and then resync with the calendar. Sometimes that is enough to resolve the issue.
