TomTom 6 awfully sloooow on 680?

Is anyone else experiencing this? I have the Palm TomTom pack (version 6.030 of the software, North America maps supplied and Western Europe maps bought later; maps and application all installed on 8 Gb SDHC card), with the TomTom GPS receiver and my 680. This all works, but it seems awfully slow. There are at least two things I notice: first, the voice prompts have very noticeable delays: " After .... three hundred .... meters, ... turn left." And more annoyingly, it seems to take a long time to update the map and position: at least 6-8 seconds most of the time, which makes the display nearly useless for driving in a complicated unfamiliar city.

In both respects, this setup is a lot slower than TomTom 5 on my wife's Tungsten T3. I would think the 680 would be faster at most things than the Tungsten, and unless they really screwed up the change from v5 to v6 of the software, I can't understand what's going on.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

What brand and speed is the SD card? I don't believe the 680 officially supports 8 gig cards so that may be a problem as well. Try loading the app on the device, or loading everything on a smaller card.

The card is from Transcend. I'm not sure of the speed: the 680 recognizes it as an 8 Gb card, though as reported elsewhere it incorrectly shows free space only as if it were a 4 Gb card. But I sort of doubt that this is the problem: the TomTom software was originally delivered on a 1 Gb card that they supplied, and I noticed the slowness right from the start, before moving to the larger card (so as to be able to keep the Europe maps together with the rest, and also have room on the card for something other than TomTom).

I'd like to hear from other 680/TT6 users, to know if this is an issue that affects anyone else. Perhaps it makes sense to try to move the app from the card to the device, but since TomTom supplies it on a card, I'd like to have some reason to believe this would make a difference before I try it.

The memory in the device is faster than the SD card, so that might help, but it might not.

Normally TT works well on my 680 but last week I was using it quite intensively and when I was going through a spot with no wireless service (even though I was in the middle of a metropolitan area) TT would hang for a good while but then it would come back to life. Other than that it's been working great.

Have you considered the GPS receiver? maybe it's not getting the updates from it fast enough and that might be causing the delays... I know that the BT on the 680 is not the best. you may want to try it with another receiver just to narrow down the problem.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem. Tomtoms booting time isn't exessive, about 8 seconds (if Bluetooth is already running). But the directions lag as described by the topicstarter, and when directions are given, the map lags too.

1. Using a SanDisk Ultra II 2GB,
2. Formatted FAT16 with clustersize 16kB,
3. I'm using a map that's only 60MB.
