680 Lockup After Charge; also, Software Disk

Howdy:

I got a Treo 680 from a colleague, initially charged it up (a bit) with a 3rd-party charger (did not get the charger with it). Charged about 20%, inserted SIM, used phone, liked phone.

Plugged back in to charge all the way, after which the phone acted dead- no power-up when you push the power button, at all.

Tried resets- pull battery, reinsert, the orange screen with "Palm" appears, black bar walks across screen, then... nothing. Screen goes blank, no operation at all. Same result with Hard reset.

Leave phone all day and overnight, battery drains completely (apparently, because removing and reinserting the battery does not cause the Orange-screen and reset bar). Plug back into charge- partially- phone works fine.

Apparently, if I allow it to charge all the way up (and this is true whether charging from charger or with USB cable), it will lock up. But, if I monitor it and disconnect charger from phone at 95%, it works fine. Charged it up last night to 95%, disconnected at midnight-ish, now at 66% (which seems probably OK with significant, though not heavy, use).

Is the charge regulation circuitry in the battery or the phone? What's the gig? Think I like this thing, but I cannot have a phone that cannot be charged overnight.

======

Also, did not get the CD with it; any advice where to get one? This is a Cingular-locked phone, if it matters.

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

That shouldn't be happening. You said you've tried hard resets, but have you tried one when the phone is working properly? If you keep having these issues you should talk to your provider about a replacement.

Well, now, after a few days of carefully monitoring it so it did not get charged too far up (I just disconnected at 95%), I forgot and left it on the charger.

And now, it's fine. Works great, no locking-up. maybe the battery was wonky after being discharged for several months? Who knows, but it's fine, now.

Also, I was able to get the software by calling Palm, who told me to call AT&T, who told me to call Palm, but who when I told them I had already called Palm and been told to call AT&T, also called Palm for me, and eventually, a nice young man from the Phillipines gave me a link to the downloadable software.

So I like this toy, and I think I'll keep it!

Thanks for the efforts, nice forum here.
