After the update, the AT&T and Cingular branded phones are essentially the same. If your getting one new though, its easier to get an AT&T one and not have to worry about doing the update.

Thanks for the quick response. I just want to understand this before I purchase this phone. I am looking at ebay and there are a lot of cingular branded ones but not a lot of att branded. So is the reason for the difference is that the cingular branded phones are older? And if you were in my position you would feel comfortable buying a cingular branded phone and just getting the free update?

I want to say I really appreciate your help. You are the only person to give me any advice on this and I have been looking for weeks. Thank you and sorry if I ask too many questions lol.

The hardware hasn't changed, just the external branding, and the software version.

after downloading the update - treo turns on and off

I installed the update and now all the phone will do is turn off and on continously until I take the battery out. My old Palm Tungsten C had a reset, but I 'm not seeing one on the Treo. Sorry I bought this thing, my contact phone numbers transferred but no addresses or other info and the battery life has been the pits. Is there a way to reset the 680?

Update:
I installed the update all my phone would do was turn off and on. Found the help section for the download and learned how to hard reset. Did that and then performed and sync. That was successful, so then tried the update again and this time it worked. My company's email service has been erased but I will reinstall that and then should be up to speed.

Can you please explain the difference in the hardware of each phone please. I would really appreciate it. I know there is a difference but just want to understand it more.

Thank you

That's just it, there isn't a hardware difference. Cingular became at&t, so all they did put an at&t logo where the Cingular logo was, with a new firmware.

My Bad. I misread your reply. Thanks for the help. So I received some bad info about there being a difference?

With great trepidation I tried the update this weekend (giving me plenty of time to work out fixes). I have a lot of third party apps so I was particularly concerned. I had to do a hard reset to get it started ... but the update ran as the Palm website said it would. I restored with NVBackup (sweet program has always come thru for me) ... all looked good. HotSync to Palm Desktop . My calendar would not sync . I searched the Forums and Help. No HELP. I tried it all ... no sync, desktop overwrite, handheld overwrite ... all options. I am a backup freak so I also run BackupBuddyVFS. I restored my calendar database from BackupBuddyVFS and ... viola ... I am lookin' good. My ZLauncher seems quirky but ... so far it seems to be back to normal. I HOPE THIS POST HELPS OTHERS.

Very helpful post, thanks! And your not alone, I also use two backups. BackupBuddy.net for OTA backups every night, and NVBackup as needed.
