Locked v. Unlocked/680 v. 750

What is the difference between the locked and unlocked version of the Treo 680? What does it mean?

Also, while out of town, my Treo 750 arrived in the mail. However, after seeing the screen of the 680 with the Palm OS and the 750 with Windows in the airport wireless store this morning, I was far more impressed with the 680. Further, none of my applications I have been using will run on the 750, unless there is a windows version.

I am now thinking about returning the 750, unopened, and ordering the 680. I think I want it unlocked, but I already have cingular as my carrier. Are there any major, or even minor advantages the 750 have over the 680? I would appreciate your help. Thanks

Locked means you can only use it on Cingular, no other GSM providers. So if you decided to switch to T-Mobile for example, you couldn't use your Treo.

Well the 750 is 3G, so your data rates will be faster. Also you can get wifi on the 750, but not the 680. The 680 also takes the the same standard SD cards as the 650, 700p and 700 w|wx and the 750 takes miniSD.

What applications are you concerned with not working? This forum is a great place to find alternatives to what you're used to be it on the Palm OS or Windows Mobile.

Thanks for the response. I have also purchased the tom tom navigation system at Palm and when I saw the 680, the screen was so much more brighter and clearer. The windows os on the 780 was kind of still, unless it had a brighter setting. It made me think the navigation system would be much easier to see on the 680, but I do not know if that is true.

I have dozens of palm os application on my 650. I think I have heard of conversion programs that can be installed, but I do not know how well they work. I would like to stick with my purchase of the 780, but I am just searching for the best alternative. All advice and recommendations are welcomed.

The windows os on the 780 was kind of dull (CORRECTION to the original)

The brightness on the 750 can be turned up several times more than what it comes from the factory. You'll have to play with the settings. Option P, just like on the 650 brings up the brightness settings. Also you can change the theme of the Today screen to something a little brighter.

There are probably Windows Mobile replacements for the Palm OS software you have, you'll have to give me some ideas for what you want/need.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to steer you away from Palm OS. I just want you to be happy with your purchase.

palm treo 680

Hi,

I have a palm treo 680. I was also searching the web for pros and cons of having a treo 750. The very first difference I can find between these both is both had different OS. Treo 680 is running on Access which is a linux operating system on the top of which palm os is running. whereas 750 is running windows. Ofcourse the memory is larger is in 750 than in 680 but in 680 I have less hanging problems. I have a onscreen keyboard in treo 680 through I can type my messages fast as well as in mymail. There are many softwares available for palm OS.

I would like to know if any external wifi card is available for 680. Though both 680 and 750 don't have inbuilt wifi.

I would also like to have more reviews about 750 and 680.

Regarding locked and unlocked it is the sim of the carrier which gets unlocked so that you can use other sim cards of different carriers as well. Like if you have cingular and if your phone is unlocked then you can use T-mobile or compatible GSM sim cards.

The 680 actually runs Palm OS Garnet, which is the same as Palm OS 5, or Garnet OS. Its owned by Access and licensed to Palm, but is different from the OS developed by Access that is based on the Linux platform. The OS on the 680 is the same one thats on the 650, just with a few added features.

As for Wifi, Palm hasn't built the drivers to allow a Palm OS Treo to use Wifi. The ones running WM5 will, but need a WiFi SDIO card to do so.

As for locked/unlocked its the phone itself that gets unlocked, not the SIM. This is what allows you to switch SIM cards from different carriers. Its good for travel.

Perhaps this can be helpful in thinking about your choice.

Locked vs unlocked: Do you ever plan to travel abroad and buy a local chip to save money on calls or do you ever expect to try and switch to T-mobile instead of Cingular in the US. If the answer is NO then getting an unlocked is probably not important to you.

750 vs 680: is Palm vs Windows. Like Mac and PC. See if it works for you and if you like the system and it does what you need then the details aren't that important. Of note, The palm screen is higher resolution which might be why you think it's looks brighter and things like memory don't matter since system requirements are different.
If you NEED wifi then the 680 is not an option but for me I don't need it since I have data through the phone anyway.

Good luck

If I remember correctly, you can call Cingular after 90 days, and they legally have to unlock it.
