Sim card not working

I have an unlocked Treo 680, and it seems that some specific SIM-cards are not supported. When inserted a 3G card it keeps searching for Network. ("Searching Network...") and then hangs or actually slow response.

Unfortunately the local provider here (Mobily) only provides the new 3G sims...

Is there a workaround for this yet? And more specific, how come this problem occurs?

Others have claimed that the 3G card might be causing the issues you describe, but I have a 3G (Cingular) card in mine and haven't had any problems at all. Is this an actual problem that you have had, or just one you have read about?

I'm actually facing this problem now. Fortunately I'm enjoying my Treo 680 with another provider I have, from Vodafone (Europe/Netherlands).

But Mobily (Middle-East/KSA) SIM-card doesn't work.
Now, I've been trying several friends and collegea's simcards and the NEWER sim-cards don't function. ("Searching network...").

Any comments / suggestions are welcome...

ps: I've informed the shop that they should check the sim prior to selling the device.. and the salesguy took my advice.

Is the Mobily network totally 3G? If it is that might be one reason you cant get it to connect.

Searching Network, or Gibberish

The problems is not with the phone. In the US it occurs with 3G SIM cards from Cingular.

For a very good discussion of the gibberish problem, go to:

http://treo.discussion.treocentral.c...d.php?t=131154

Read the posts from Electro-Tether on page 5. He recommends getting a new SIM card from Cingular with model no: 73000 G 3021 to replace the existing model no. 73000 O 4021.

I have had the same problem. Cingular said to go to a Cingular store and get a new SIM card for free. Store only had the 4021 cards, which I already have. Cingular is now mailing me the 3021 card. Will let you know if it solves my problem.

They support both 3G as GSM. So that's not it.

I'm not very convinced that the phone is bug-free. Essentially the hardware should support the simcard and as far as i know they simcards are made downwards compatible. (ie. you can insert a 3G card in an old phone).

I've run some additional sim-cards and some of them work and some don't. This behaviour shows on all unlocked Treo 680 I test (4 pieces).

I'm having the same problem as you. The phone is constantly turned off even when the sim card is inserted. If I try to turn the phone on, the unit resets by itself. I tried different sim cards, same problem. I have a regular cingular sim card, not a 3G one.
My phone is cingular branded. I tried updating the phone with AT&T's 2.11 update. In about half-way through the update process, it stops, and gives an error message saying something like (sorry I don't remember the exact wording) "GSM firmware update couldn't update your unit? make sure you're using correct hardware"
This happened when updating using SD card or via cable.
If anyone can help with this, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
