| A Few Questions.... ![]() | Has anyone else fallen foul of this weird logistical shortcoming in the pTunes upgrading system. The version of pTunes Basic (3.1) that came with my Treo 680 asked me to register and gave me a code which unlocked a bonus software feature - basically the ability to re-skin the player. I then installed the 4.0 trial version over my original (registered) version of 3.1 and decided I liked it enough to upgrade. So I went to the NormSoft site and clicked on the upgrade option. It asked me to enter my registration code. However, the registration code I had used to unlock the bonus software was no longer visible. So I used the auto-response e-mail link on the NormSoft Web site to regenerate the original 3.1 code. Or tried to. The auto-response e-mailer sent back a note saying that I had no order history. Of course I hadn't. My first order would have been to upgrade to version 4.0. Reading the instructions again, I see that there is a note right at the bottom, which suggests that - BEFORE installing 4.0 - one makes a note of the original registration code. One thinks of stable doors and bolting horses. Furthermore, why is registration code not included in the e-mail which confirms that registration has been successful? Does anyone have a suggestion for a way out of this ludicrous impasse. Thanks in anticipation for any feedback. Nigel |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The "upgrade" and "registration number" that you get when you "register" the bundled version of PTunes is just to get them you contact info. When you upgrade to a new version (4.0) you are not re-registering, so there should be no need to enter a registration number. The ability to choose skins is available in the version that you purchase, and you won't have to enter a seperate code to get it to work.

| A Few Questions.... ![]() | The trick, NormSoft's friendly and efficient support guy tells me, is to uninstall version 4.0. The version 3.1 which came bundled with the Treo 680 (and is in the ROM memory) is then visible once more, as is the registration number. One can then use this registration number to upgrade to 4.0 at a cost of $29.95, rather than paying $39.95 for a full version. OK, it's only $10, but the Upgrade glitch has been acknowledged as a 'known problem'. Now that I have pTunes 4.0 installed, I am very happy with it. It's a great improvement over its predecessor, with a cleaner interface and much better sound. Nigel |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Oh, yeah. Sorry Its been so long since I've done that, that I forgot all about the upgrade option and the registration number needed. Confusion! I even had that exact same problem at one point in time. Man I feel like an idiot. ![]()
