No select network screen?!?

I was reading some tips on how to increase battery life, and I saw that one of things mentioned was about selecting your carrier network.

The tip said to go to phone > options >select network.

Well, I tried that, except there isn't a select network option listed! I have the following:

phone display options
sound preferences
call preferences
dial preferences
system preferences (this brings me to the preferences screen)
call barring
phone lock
phone info
tips
about phone

Why don't I have a select network screen? I have an unlocked 680 bought directly from Palm. I can edit the network settings in the preferences page, but this doesn't do anything about letting me choose which band to use (850/900/1800/1900). I can choose GPRS as the connection type in the network preferences, although EDGE isn't listed as an option.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Chris

The only "select network" option I'm aware of is under preferences>network (from with in the preferences menu). As far as I know this is only for choosing which data network you connect to, not which call network.

The 650 on Cingular did not have a network select option. It was disabled, even on unlocked GSM, on the Cingular networks to prevent the users from selecting a roaming tower with a stronger signal than the Cingular tower they were locked into. This is probably a carry-over by Cingular.

There was a "networkselect hack" that worked great for the 650, but it hasn't been updated for the 680.

You can get instructions here for creating your own hack

Just browsing through old posts, trying to learn about the known issues and tips'n'tricks related to my new Treo680... I found this post. Well, on my Treo680 the network selection is under the Phone screen, Menu, Options, "Select Network..."

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
