Can you please be more specific? I'm assuming an OEM bluetooth that came with the car? Bluetooth runs under a common software. You'll need to check with the car manufactuer what version of bluetooth the car has.
For example, UCONNECT for the Damiler Chrysler brand has a website with a list of supported phone/manufacturers and an explaination of bluetooth. Other then that if your device is compatible, follow the instructions in the car manual.
If your car is "popular" there are message boards specific to your make and model that probably has threads on the exact same thing you're running into.
Als, don't be afraid to try a couple of times. When installing my Blackberry connect. I had to remove/reinstall the bluetooth connect software 3 times before it "took". Each time, you get a little bit more familar with the software and process and by the end, you'll be an expert and know all the in's and out's
