Vibrating Email Alert

Hello all.

I just received a Treo 680 from work. Nice device. I've been a long time Palm fan and this thing is just beautiful.

My problem. I have a Blackberry connect setup using versamail. I would like to use vibrate and no sound when I receive an email. For the life of me I can't figure out how to accomplish this.

Again, inbound email alert, I would like to have the vibrate feature and no sound.

Thanks!

I don't use versamail but just quickly looking I might suggest you need to check 2 places.

under versamail/options/preferences/alerts mine is set to "system" If yours is the same then goto home screen prefs/sound and alerts/application then choose "messaging" from the drop down menu and adjust those to vibrate all the time.

Or you could switch your ringer off using the switch on the top.

my best guess without actually setting up versamail on my system.

I tried this. I don't think a vibrating email alert with versamail is possible. It's either sound or nothing. I tried every single combination using Preferences/ sounds/alerts and the versamail alerts.

I have tried this as well. It is disappointing. Most of the time my phone is on silent and it would be really nice if my phone vibrated when I received an email.

It definitely vibrates when receiving email either silent or ringer turned on. Your problem is a failure in the software your using. Chattermail has all the options your looking for although I have no idea about it's blackberry compatibility.

You can definitely set it to vibrate when it receives email when the ringer is off. Level7's needs are more unusual and it doesn't surprise me that it's not standard in the apps although like I said, chatter does it.

wow this versamail/blackberry connect is a piece of crap.

It inconsistently shows attachments. I would have thought that it would use the documents2go software but it uses it own text pad looking application. It doesn't even download all of the document.

It seems they wrote this app in a couple of days...

No email vibrate notification
No consistent displaying of attachments

BTW, Chattermail does not support Blackberry enterprise server. There has to be a better way. I was lucky my boss authorized me getting this device. I'm sort of the guinea pig on this one.

From what I was reading, the whole legal issue with Blackberry kinda put a halt to the development of blackberry integration. If Blackberry didn't have the legal issues, I'm sure Palm would be out with version 2.0 by now and I would be sitting pretty. But now...I'm stuck with a crappy first release.

In my estimation, it's about 50% there if you need to rely on versamail/blackberry for business email. The device rocks though.

What Device IN THE WORLD will let you tune your guitar/analyze your voice or music notes, pick up (and see) real time engine parameters (and clear trouble codes) from your car, play music, talk on the phone, create word/excel/PP docs, play music, log O2 sensor metrics, download/upload fuel maps (to your motorcycle) ALL ON ONE device?!?!?!? And I'm not even listing the obvious or some of the other stuff it can do. How many?! NONE except Palm!

But, I'm a little miffed at Palm. They could be the next Microsoft if they played their cards right but they just don't "see" what they've created. I'm still waiting for them to wake up and realize what they have. I am floored everytime I fire it up.

Hey, quick question regarding your comments...
If one were not concerned about opening or viewing attachments at all on the 680 utilizing BlackBerry Connect... would the BBC software still be crappy? Asked another way, do the email subjects and bodies come through fine (consistently)?

Thanks

Yes, it downloads emails all day long without issues. My 680 gets the emails BEFORE my laptop running Outlook connected to the network.

One issue that may be of concern to you are large email messages. When a message is large it is cut off at some point (I think it is specified by the number of bytes in the BB connect manager) you have to hit a button that brings down the rest of the message. Well, i think that works up to a point. Sometimes it will bring down the rest of the message if the message isn't to large but other times, when the message is really large, it will cut it off again. I think this is a message size limitation but don't know for sure.

If you don't care about attachements (ANY) then this will work for you. If you want to see pictures of little Jimmy and Suzy in an email, look elsewhere or at least until they fix it.

Cool, thanks for the response Level7.
I'm really just going to be using it for glancing at important work e-mails. 99% of which won't have any attachments and shouldn't be too long either. Think I'm gonna pull the trigger on it and cross my fingers that I'll be satisfied. If I can figure out anything with the silent alert, I'll let you know.

Thanks again.

@ bigcatny: The problem isn't a failure of the software, it just isn't written in there at all! Slightly different, but just as annoying!

@ level7 and Nacnud: The failure to download all the message is derived from a setting in Versamail (or BBC). The Blackberry Connect software is written as a rider to the Versamail software, which is why it functions almost exactly like Versamail and won't work with any other email software. The difference is its written to allow a persistant connection to a BB server. The max message size allowed in Versamail is 5120 KB, so if your message and attachments combined are larger than this they will be truncted. Its annoying, but its the way the software is written. If you are always getting large emails this can take some getting used to. These are the prices we pay.....
