680 patch - anyone else hear this? *UPDATED*

**Moderator Edit**

Thanks to user MarieC for pointing out that Palm has an update available for this on their European site. Note that it does not specify locked vs unlocked, but does state that if a hard reset is performed the update will need to be reinstalled. I have installed this, as have a few others, and will report any noticable changes in this thread.

A direct link to the (euro) update can be found here. Click here for the US site.

Additional update for Cingular/AT&T users. See this thread for a full ROM update that includes this patch

I called to complain about the battery issues I had (same as already discussed here). After getting their CSR to agree to send me a box for a return, I get a call from a Palm tech support person in India the next day. He admits there is an issue that causes a battery drain on my unit. He says they were able to determine my unit is affected based on the serial number of my phone. For the record, I bought it on the first day it was available from a store in the Detroit airport.

The tech support guy said the drain happens becasue applications do not shut down properly. He says the patch to address this will be available next week - early in the week or middle of the week. it will be availabe on the Palm site.

The reason I have some doubt about what he says is becasue he tried so hard to get me to let them off the hook for sending the box out. I wonder if Palm corporate is on them for all the returns they are allowing.

It does cost them a bunch of money on the unit to handle the return process then mark the phone as refurbished and get it back in the channel...to to mention getting you a new unit.

The software fix is plausible and thats what subsequent treos had in their build of the OS at retail. The delay is probably due to QA making sure a retrospective fix can be applied safely and the extra overhead of managing that with/through Cingular.

Thanks for letting us know!

I guess it makes sense why it drains even when you have the radio off and the screen shut down. Probably the soft reset shuts everything down.

Information found on PalmAttitude.org :

Palm has quietly released a patch that addresses an issue about the camera draining the Treo's battery, even when it's in standby mode.

The patch is available on the european Palm Knowledge Base (solution number : 10946).

Actually, I think it is specifying unlocked Treo 680s:

"Palm device requirements:
Treo 680 smartphone: Unlocked GSM Treo 680 models "

I haven't had any issues with my camera and power drain but it does say that ALL Treo 680 owners should install it, so I'm giving it a try.

Thanks for the information!
