Roaming Ring Tone -- a must?

The Treo 680 has a feature in Preferences>Sounds&Alerts>Ring Tones, where you can set a special ring tone for calls you receive when roaming. I only now realised it is not just an option, but you actually must do so.

Is there any way of making the Treo just use the regular ring tones, no matter whether it is roaming or not?

I would like to maintain the ringtones I've set for special groups even when I am travelling (I mean, I know when I am roaming if I haven't set the network selection to automatic.)

I find this really annoying, because I just switched operator into one that is a "virtual operator", so now ALL calls are shown (and sound) as roaming calls.

Palm Support suggested that if I choose same ring tone for "Known Caller" and "Roaming", then I should be able to hear the Category-spesified ring tones like even while roaming (like it works with Known Callers: category spesific ringtones override the Known Caller ringtone).

However, it seems to me that the Roaming ringtone always overrides all other ringtone settings when roaming. When roaming, I can only hear the Roaming ringtone.

Can anyone confirm this one way or the other? Is Palm Support right, and therefore, something wrong with my Treo? Or is this a bug with Treo 680s in general (I don't know if 650 has a similar setting for roaming ringtone)? Or is this a "feature" I just have to live with?

EDIT: Just got correction from the TechSupport. They confirm it is a feature: "The roaming calls will unfortunately override the other settings, and it is not possible to shut off this function." I wish it were optional only. Any third party apps/hacks that might help?
