I don't have cingular/att so it's not a tower issue for me.

I was having the jibberish 5 or more times per day. I uninstalled ZLauncher and it hasn't happened since. I fully expect it to come back, though, seeing that some people with this problem have no 3rd party apps installed at all. For now, I'm ok.

This doesn't happen very often to me - as compared to others anyway. I have been keeping a log of each time since the beginning of April. Usually every couple days or so. Once as long as 10 days in between "gibberish episodes". But I have had it 3 times today. Spent some time on the phone with Cingular today trying to find out when it's going to be fixed. All I got was the standard line - they have never heard of the problem and it must be a problem with my phone. I told them if they didn't fix it I wanted a different phone. Well, since I'm under contract, I can only exchange mine for another 680. I tried to tell them that it's not just my 680, it's all of them. I am going to have to pay $175 to get out of the contract, I guess.

I wouldn't get rid of the phone just yet. I also don't have the problem very often, and normally I can just go to the main menu, pull up something like Google Maps(great app for your Treo if you havn't tried it yet), and things tend to go back to normal after a little while. As long as you sync your phone regularly(to your computer), the worst thing that might happen would be you need to revert to factory and then sync back from your computer.

Note that the ONLY app I have downloaded to my phone at this point is google maps, and the update to ptunes. There are some apps out there that would crash my phone, so obviously I uninstalled them when I found an app that didn't work(which is why I only have Google Maps as a 3rd-party app).

I have a locked Cingular 680 purchased from Cingular in December 2006 in Orlando, FL Firmware R01.31, Software TREO 680-1.03-CNG, 64K SIM.

I had very few problems (only a lock up every week or so) for the first couple of months of using this phone. I had a Nokia 3120b previously and it, too, locked up every once in a while.

The lock-ups started slowly and intermittently in February or so and have gotten worse and worse. They sometimes (maybe 5% of them) happen when I try to answer a call. Most often, I don't know it's locked until I try to use it and find I can't. The phone is completely unresponsive. Sometimes turning the phone off and on is possible and that unlocks it. Other times no matter how long I mash the off button, nothing works and I have to soft reset. Usually that works for a few hours.

But, I'm finding that by the time I discover the phone is locked, it has been locked for some period of time and I've missed calls. However, I only know that I've missed calls if the caller leaves a message. The phone log does not show any calls at all from whoever may have called me and not left a message.

The gibberish as reported here has just started within the last couple of weeks.

I do have very few third party software programs installed. However, the increase in lock ups and start of the gibberish does not correlate in time at all with the installation of those apps---I loaded the apps within days of getting the phone.

The lack of reliability of the phone is driving me nuts. I'm losing productivity and gaining aggravation at unacceptable levels.

I am not a techie, at all. I really just need my tools to work. But, today, in desperation, I went to the Palm site and decided to try a system reset. Won't know for a while if that helped.

I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me. I have had a Palm for years and I like the calendaring/contacts/memo software very much. This phone replaced my m515---and, yes, I did the data transfer carefully. I'm generally happy with Cingular and have the whole family (6) on the plan. I would hate to switch, but would consider it for a Treo that works.

I had the 3G sim card that came with my phone. Some times this was happening 5 times a day to me. Other times it wouldn't happen for a few days and then start again. I happened to have another 3G sim card that I hadn't used. I called Cingular and got the card switched over. I had read that the 73000G 3021 card wasn't having this problem. Thats what I happened to have. Now I haven't had a gibberish problem in a little over a week. (knock on wood) After this post I might but so far so good. If you get Cingular to give you a new card make sure it is the model listed above.
