I talked directly with a Palm engineer and he said that they extensively tested the theory of the SIM cards being the issue and that it never panned out.

They are currently working on ROM fix which will address this and the host of other issues plaguing the 680. The ROM update will indeed require a hard reset and be required on all devices.

I hope we see something on this pretty soon. It appears to show up more often when you are in minimal coverage. I work in a RADAR facility that is pretty well shielded and invariably it happens to me at least once or twice a day when working. I will say though that the issue of not being able to call out doesn't seem to effect me, but then again it may be a good while before I catch it.

I will also add that even though the main screen shows the garbled text and no signal, a program I use that overlays the Palm phone screen (DialByPhoto) shows a relatively good indication of signal strength on it's indicator.

gibberish and sim card

I posted about the gibberish issue in an earlier forum, but I am relieved (and angered) to see so many other people having the same problem. I brought the 680 to three different Cingular stores and of course the gibberish was not on display. After numerous calls to Cingular I am convinced that they have have no one other than minimum wage imbeciles working there. No one there has heard of the gibberish issue. I also have the 73000 4021 sim card. I am going to the Cingular store to replace it with a 64K. One interesting thing is that after the last time I synched it, it hasn't gone to gibberish or frozen up. I also had a problem with corded headsets causing gibberish.

More on Cingular gibberish

I got my 680 on Dec 30th. It began showing the gibberish problem around the end of February. It gradually got worse until I was doing soft resets three to four times a day. In early April I called Palm who told me to call Cingular. Cingular told me to download a fix from the Internet. I looked but found no fix. I went to a Cingular store in Charlotte where they said they had not heard of the problem but told me to call Cingular using their phone to get a replacement.
My replacement phone came two days ago. It has done the gibberish once so far. I have the same Sim card, the 3G fireball one. Today, a "special team member" in Cingular called me. She was totally confused about the whole issue. She told me that there is supposed to be a "fix" coming soon, but since no one seems to know what is causing the problem I am sceptical about this.
She offered to replace the phone again but I declined at this time. I can't see the point. Since it only happens on Treo 680s in the Cingular system that has to be a major clue. I also had the problem on my first phone where the green answer button wouldn't work. I had to call everyone back after they called me.
I wonder what percentage of 680 owners are affected by this?

There are threads similar to this one on every treo board on the Web. I would guess about 100% of Cingular-680 customers-- or "victims"-- are affected.

I've given up on the SIM card theory...just waiting for a firmware fix....

Is this only Cingular Treo 680's or the unlocked ones on the cingular network as well. I'm getting really tired of it...

I believe this issue only affects Cingular-branded 680s, NOT unlocked phones. The speculation is that this is because of Cingular-specific firmware, but to my knowlege Cingular hasn't confirmed that.

While I'm not denying that it is potentially a Cingular specific issue, I've had a 680 since the week they were released and have never had the gibberish issue.

just got my cingular 680.
I'm showing Firmware: R01.31 right out of the box.
Software: Treo680-1.03-CNG

I'm actually showing AT&T in the upper left corner.

I'll update if I see the error.

I'll verify this SIM works. Just received a letter from Cingular in the mail telling me I must upgrade my 2G card by May 1 due to network changes.

The card the store gave me is the Good 3G - 7300G 3021. It also changed my carrier banner to AT&T after I rebooted the device.

This is on an unlocked 680 direct from Palm.

Firmware: MW01.50
Software: TREO680-1.04-ROW
