I have been having the same problem. Mine is locked from a Cingular store in San Jose.

Firmware: R01.31
Software: Treo680-1.03-CNG
Carrier DB: 292
Hardware: A

I went to the cingular store today and traded in the 3g sim card for the regular 64k one. So far I haven't had the issue again(crosses fingers). The reason I had traded cards to the non 3g was because I had read a post on here saying that had fixed the issue for someone else. I will post back if the problem continues.

Good luck to us all!

i had the giberish characters last night, i did a soft reset and then it couldnt find a network signal, i called cingy and they said my area currently has moderate coverage, which i thought was a bs excuse because i was using my brothers cingular phone to talk to her. so i hung up with her after her saying she couldnt do anything and ended up doing a full format and it began working again.

my info:
cingular store in warren ohio
locked branded
its the new 3g sim card, they said my old one 64k wouldnt work, which is probably bs

Well i just got off the phone with cingular text support...... After 45 minutes and having me make and recieve several phone calls, they sent me some kind of update. The tech claimed that the phones are not updating the activation, and that the new update should fix the issue. we will see.

obviously not, because after 27 hours it happened again. Im ready to get a refund at this point. There isn't a tech there that knows what they are talking about. In fact today yesterday I could hear the manager telling the tech what to tell me.

Hello,

Now on phone #2 - original phone #1 (locked) bought at Cingular company-owned store in Framingham, MA - day after Thanksgiving, 11/24. After 2 weeks started freezing and cycling on and off continuously, couple of hard resets (and many many hours with tech support) - back to the store!

Phone #2 - from the same Cingular store, locked phone, both phones using my old SIM card from Treo 650 - freezing and cycling on and off again after 2 weeks, did a hard reset - waiting another week to see how it goes. Have not put any third party s/w on phone #2 but had put a few applications on phone #1 (MobiTV, some MP3's, AIM, TCPM, Tetris).

Phone #2 - Cingular locked
Firmware R01.31

Getting very frustrated! Hopefully Palm will do something soon to fix these problems.

Still locking up

While I have to admit it's not as often now with the 64K SIM as it was with the 3G one I'm still getting the same issue.

What's funny is it seems to happen on the weekends more than any other time. Does Cingular push updates on the weekend or something?

Still no 3rd party SW loaded.

Firmware: R01.31
Software: Treo680-1.03-CNG
Carrier DB: 292
Hardware: A

Does Cingular read this stuff?

BTW, the 'work around' of answering the phone using the center key rather than the green key still seems to work. When I go to pick up the phone if I hit the green key it locks, I then remember 'Oh yeah, it's jacked!' and press the center key and it answers (displaying the jibberish in the corner). Once the call is done it goes back to saying Cingular.
