Unlocked Treo 680 more reliable than ones from Cingular (?)

Just by reading the posts, it seems that compared to the unlocked Treo 680s (provided directly by Palm), those that are provided by Cingular (either free or with reduced price) suffer from more software issues.

Is it real or that the large number or Cingular customers gives a wrong impression?

Haven't had any real issues with my Cingy 680. Hmmm...

i have an unlocked version, and i'm waiting for a replacement to be shipped out. my phone sometimes freezes during phone calls, i just don't get the gibberish characters that the cingular versions seem to be getting.

That's the thing. I am using a Cingy 680 and haven't noticed any freezing problems, or any gibberish characters in the top left corner. It does act a little slow on occasion, but that's usually when it's trying to auto download my email and do whatever I'm doing at the same time. For not being able to handle concurrent multitasking, it does pretty well! I think a lot of people mistake the sometimes sluggish app changes for freezing. Remember that true freezing will last more than a few seconds, and can often cause you to have to reset the device.

Would probably be a good idea to compare firmware/phone version numbers between the Cingular and unlocked Treo's.

The Cingy models (most) do have n earlier firmware version than the unlocked model and for some it has been more solid. I had a Cingy one for review and aside from slowness and battery life, it seemedd pretty stable.

Ive got a brand new 680 from cingular and it's been crashing regularly when I use email. I've had it for 4 days. I've also noticed the gibberish characters in the top left corner and problems connecting to the cingular network. I'm moving over from a cingulat blackberry and never experienced network issues in this area when using the BB. I'm thinking about returning it and moving to a 700w or waiting for the 750.

You'd have to change carriers as well as Cingular don't carry the 700w
