680 - Cingular - inconsistent email access - Treo Forum

This is my first Palm product (unlocked graphite 680) and I've just used it for one day. I've been finding that my email (a Gmail account accessed with Versamail) only gains access about half the time. I always have about 4 bars of signal strength and I have nothing but default settings and software on the device. The only thing I've done is sync my address book and calendar (iCal) using the Missing Sync to my MacBook Pro.

Also, the device has needed 3 hard resets after odd behavior. At one point when I would use the stylus or the 5-way button to select something on the screen a totally different app would open. Then it would hang and get stuck (froze twice). It also wouldn't display email addresses by default in the contact cards (even though iCal does). I could go on with about 4 other peculiarities, but I've grown weary of dealing with Palm today.

Is anyone having inconsistent email access with Versamail and Cingular?

So....has no one had issues with Gmail and Versamail with Cingular as the provider? I'm still having problems and thought this forum might be a good place for feedback.

I just checked email about 20 minutes ago and I could see the email downloading via the progress bar. It completes (i.e. - gets to 100%) and then there's no new mail in my inbox. I can repeat multiple times with no success. Then, I open my Macbook Pro and can download the message with no problem (so, I know there was actually valid mail waiting to be downloaded).

Any ideas?

have you got these settings?

Mail Service: Other
Protocol: POP
Username: your_gmail_account@gmail.com
password: your_gmail_password
Incoming Mail Server: pop.gmail.com
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
Advanced:
Incoming Server Settings:
Port Number: 995
Check Use Secure Connections (SSL)
Outgoing Server Settings:
Port Number: 25
Check Use Securel Connection (SSL)
Check authentication (ESMTP)
Username: your_gmail_account@gmail.com
Password: your_gmail_password

I use gmail on my 680 with no problems. Have you enabled POP access on the gmail prefs?

I also use gmail with the 680. I was having a little trouble this morning, where it wouldn't download any messages saying they don't pass the time filter. You could try going into your gmail settings, disable the POP access, then go back and re-enable it, but choose the second option. Enable only messages from now on. This worked fine for me, if I chose the first option, it would only give me messages up to a certain date 2 years ago, thus failing to pass thru the filter.

Still no luck. My settings are the same as those posted above. I see the messages coming in (as reported by the small pop-up status window) and then it finishes and the messages are nowhere to be found.

I tried calling Palm but was told to call one number and then another. They don't seem to have an 800 support number anywhere on their website (at least not that I could find). Does anyone know what one has to do to simply speak with a support person?

I guess I'll try reinstalling the Versamail software on the Palm. I just want this device to work.

I did yet another hard reset (4th one) and set up the account again. It seems to be working for now. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Ok, so it did it again. It downloaded mail fine this morning. Then, just now I had a message and it said "downloading 1 of 1" and when it completed, the message didn't show up anywhere (inbox or otherwise). I then opened Mail on my Macbook Pro and downloaded the message. The message was a large HTML only message from an online site that I subscribe to (The Red Cross). I thought perhaps it was simply having trouble downloading a large graphics heavy file like that, so I logged into an alternate Gmail account and sent myself an email that had only a subject line and the word "test" in the body.

Same thing. "Getting messages.....downloading 1 of 1" The message never shows up.

Also, does anyone know how to hide an app and let it work in the background while you do something else? I can't seem to figure out how to make the thing multitask.

as far as i've heard, the 680 does not have multitasking in the sense you're talking about. your email problem has me baffled.

The problem has Palm support baffled as well. I've been on the line with them now for 35 minutes. They've suggested all the stuff I've already done (set up account again, soft reset, hard reset, try gmail account on other computer, etc. etc.). I even downloaded test messages to a Blackberry of a friend and we can get the mail there with no problem. I can get the account to work with my Mac and with another device.

Now they're suggesting that I try another app like Snappermail (?) or something similar. I'm waiting to talk to a level 2 tech, but having no luck (plus they don't even have a toll free number, so I'm paying for my "free" tech support). Sorry to rant, but this is completely frustrating and I really wanted to like Palm. I love the product other than this one issue. They're a TERRIBLE company when it comes to support.

Bottom line - I still see messages downloading in the status window, but they NEVER show up in the inbox.
