Smile Moving from 600 to 680

Can anyone tell me... I see in Andrew's blog that there is great ease in setting up the new 680 if you already have a Treo and are syncing it with your computer. Not having to instal the software that comes with the 680 etc...

I have a Treo 600. Is it still going to be compatible? I've read a lot about how there were so many changes from the 600 to the next generation, that only 650 forward software and accessories will work with the the 680.

Has anyone else converted from the 600 to the 680? My new Crimson beauty is set to arrive today by noon and I want to be READY!!!!

Thanks!

I made the transition from Zire 72 only yesterday. I am certainly no expert, but I can tell you what I did, after having done some research on the web.

I guess what to do depends on what system you have been using for syncing the Treo with your desktop. You can get very good instructions from Palm website (see Treo 680, upgarding from a previous handheld). if you've been using Missing Sync, see their website (and with MissingSync there's no need to install anything from the CD accompanying the new Treo).

A few things seem to be recommended alike. Do one final sync with your old Treo, then rename it using the desktop application. When you connect the new Treo, give it the same name (HotSync name) as your old one used to have. This way you can avoid from getting software from your old backup which is incompatible with the new version of Palm OS. Secondly, your activation codes for purchased software still work.

What I did, and can recommend though it takes some time, is to download new versions of all your software from the net and installing them anew on the new Treo (that's why you need the software activation codes to work). I was pleased to find that many software had a new version (which was valid with the old code). You can install the databases (DB) for software which you have modified from the Backup folder of your old Treo (now with the new user name!). Software which has no new version or which you can't find on the web you can install from the Backup. Some stuff I just beamed from the old Treo.

If some old software causes trouble (I had two which seem to be incompatible, PiLoc being one), there's no need to panic even if the new Treo ends up in a loop of resetting itself. Just do a warm rest (system reset; see Treo's manual).

The biggest pain with the method above was DocumentsToGo. I know of no way of transforming all the documents from one user to another, so I had to reinstall them all. Luckily, having learned from the unstabilities of DTG in the past, I have them all in one folder, so it was just a question of drag-and-drop of the lot (and then reassigning categories).

Hope this helps! I am sure you'll have your new Treo up and running in no time!

I didn't convert from a 600, but the basic PIM information is relatively unchanged. I don't see you having any problems. Remember to do a sync before you start, run the desktop and software installation cd, then sync your 680! I've had mine (a Cingy) since Monday, and I LOVE it. Been following your posts so I hope everything turns out good today! Let us know what ya think!

Thanks to everyone for all of the information (sometimes drama fueled speculation ), tips, and general camaraderie! My Treo 680 (Crimson!) came today as promised (THANK YOU AIRPORT WIRELESS!) and it's more awesome than I could imagine! I'm sure I'll be chatting it up for a while as I explore the newness that is the Treo 680.

The sync and setup was flawless. Thank you for your suggestions. I had more trouble setting up my new bluetooth headset than I did getting my info off my old 600 onto my fancy new 680! LOL!

Anyway... thanks again!!!
